Secretary of State

Here's the leading contender.
Ties to foreign governments, and oh yea, he made over $12 million giving paid speeches.
Sound familiar?
I love the smell of Hopey Changey Stuff in the morning!!

Giuliani took money from Qatar, Venezuela, Iranian exiles

His foreign clientele could present conflicts of interest as secretary of state.

Rudy Giuliani's paid consulting for foreign governments would present conflicts of interest as the nation's top diplomat that would make the Clinton Foundation look trifling.Since leaving the New York mayor's office, Giuliani has made millions as a lawyer and consultant, including for some clients at odds with U.S. foreign policy. When some of those ties surfaced amid Giuliani's own presidential bid in 2007, they were considered to pose an unprecedented number of ethical quandaries for a potential commander in chief.

Now those concerns have no doubt been eclipsed by Donald Trump's own web of business entanglements, which are still not completely known to the public. Giuliani's participation in Trump's transition and contention for the job of secretary of state poses a direct challenge to Trump's promises to root out Washington self-dealing and ban his administration's officials from lobbying for foreign governments. In 2011, an exiled Iranian political party called the Mujahedin e-Khalq, known as the MEK, paid Giuliani to give a speech in Washington calling on the State Department to remove the group from its list of terrorist organizations.

The MEK recruited a host of other formal officials to its cause and succeeded in reversing the terrorist designation in 2012.A subsidiary of Giuliani's consulting firm, Giuliani Partners, advised Qatar's state-run oil company on security at a natural gas plant, The Wall Street Journal reported. Qatar is a U.S. ally that hosts a major American military base but once stifled an attempt to arrest Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, who went on to mastermind the Sept. 11 attacks, according to the 9/11 commission report.

The same subsidiary, Giuliani Security & Safety, provided security advice to a Singapore gambling project on behalf of a partnership that included a tycoon close to the North Korean regime who is considered an organized crime figure by the U.S., according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. "I think the person involved, if it's correct, was a 1 percent owner that had no involvement with us, we never worked for, had nothing to do with," Giuliani told NBC's Tim Russert at the time.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: Secretary of State

I really hope Trump looks elsewhere for a Sec or State.

The SoS is your face to the world and probably the most important person in your cabinet. The things they do can either create or prevent war. Trump just can't hand the position out to a campaign loyalist.

Guliani should be disqualified out of his sheer lack of experience in foreign policy and diplomacy. His conflicts of interest just add to it.

Re: Secretary of State

Lager is right.  The 'draining the swamp' promise was a real load of crap.  I suppose it's ok to take care of your cronies, but appoint them to cushy, non-crucial positions.  Ambassador to Iceland or something.  I still remember the "You're doing a hellava job Brownie" thing when a horse judge was put in charge of FEMA.

Re: Secretary of State

Well, it's a catch-22.

If you use people who have been part of the D.C. establishment, people scream that you're keeping the status quo.

If you go outside and bring in people with zero government experience, people scream that your're bringing in people that won't know how to run a government operation.

Personally, I just don't want to see unqualified people running key departments of the federal government.

Like him or not (and I do not), Rudy is a reasonable choice for Attorney General.

He is wholly unqualified to be SoS.

Re: Secretary of State

Let's hope it is NEITHER Giuliania or Bolton, both of which have been mentioned.

Re: Secretary of State

I'm still in a long dream.  The election is not over so none of this ever happened.

Bolton would have us in a world war by the end of January.

Re: Secretary of State

Evidently, Rudy sees the Secretary of State position as an excellent opportunity to expand his international marketing of his consultancy company (Giuliani Partners) and his security firm (Giuliani Security & Safety in collusion with Investigative Management Group), set up some contracts with foreign corporations and governments for his own personal enrichment.

Kinda the same thing he jumped all over the Clinton Global Initiative for. The major difference is that CGI is a respected charity that is highly ranked by all charity watchdog groups as one that passes contributions into actual projects for the betterment of mankind, whereas Rudy's ventures are privately held, for profit, security scams that are designed to frighten people and then sell them a service to (hopefully, but not guaranteed to) eliminate the 'threat'.

You go Rudy, and sell your 'service' globally . . . heck, you might even find another wife in the process. Maybe you'll find another classy broad for your boss while you're at it.

Based on Bolton's previous tenure as delegate to the UN, and the level of unfavorability expressed by the people on his staff along with others that came in contact with him while he held that position, it sure doesn't seem like he has the temperament necessary for a job that requires restraint, collaboration, and compromise with others. I think he would be a disaster as Secretary of State.

Re: Secretary of State

Much like Trump is a disaster as POTUS for many of the same reason Rongone mentions.
