Re: Election Day Diary

Up at 5, my usual time.
Feeling oddly anxious.

The Clintons and Obamas had a fine rally in Philly last night. She is sounding positive.

Apparently more people have already voted in Florida than in the entire 2000 election. Looking for high turnout today.

Clinton won the vote Dixville Notch, NH vote.
Hillary Clinton 4, Donald Trump 2, Gary Johnson 1 -- and a single write-in surprise: Mitt Romney.
As Dixville goes, so goes the nation.

Checked in with the FiveThirtyEight.
Nate has Clinton with a 71.6% chance of victory.

So, I start the day confident in the outcome.
But, I am wistful. I feel that we wasted a year. We didn't talk seriously about our place in the world. We didn't talk seriously about wage stagnation or infrastructure. We din't talk at all about education, climate change, or the terrible opiate abuse epidemic that is killing people all through Appalachia and the northeast.
No, we insulted POWs. We had little Marco. We scapegoated immigrants, fantasized about a beautiful wall that will never be built. Before we yelled crooked  Hillary, we yelled crooked Ted. We talked about emails. And talked. We promised to put political opponents in jail. We saw the rise of white nationalism.
Let's face it. It's a mess.

I'd like to think that tomorrow we can start putting it back together and get the nation moving again. But, the republicans are already hinting that they won't approve anybody Clinton appoints to the Supreme Court. Remember, there is a vacancy on the Court. The republicans wouldn't consider Obama's appointment in March because, they said, it was too close to the end of his term, and democracy demanded that The People get to pick a new President first. What will be their excuse now?

Some damn fools are even talking about Impeachment.
The country will not come together until people want it to come together.

Oh well, the sun will come up soon. And with the dawn, my optimism always rises.
Maybe the bigotry we saw is just the dying gasp of soon to be extinct movement.

See you at the polls.

Re: Election Day Diary

Eating Breakfast. Watching the local news. Waiting for my wife to get ready. Going to get my daughter up in a couple of minutes. She wants to go with us to the polls.

Decided to go vote first thing today. I have a feeling that as the day goes on, the lines are going to grow and I don't want to be stuck for a couple hours.

Polls open in PA at 7:00 a.m.

By the way, 7-11 is giving out free coffee today.

Anyway, go vote.

Re: Election Day Diary

Also, my standard answer today to anyone who asks me I voted for:

"Like most of the e-mail on Hillary's server, that's classified information."

Came up with that one on my own.

Re: Election Day Diary

Got to the polls around 0740.
Cold morning with a hard frost. But a brilliant sun is warming things up fast.

Dealing with the crowds here in Richmond.

Richmond Massachusetts  is a tiny hamlet on the far western edge of the state.
We have a sheriff, five poll workers and a small but steady trickle of voters coming in.

Very Norman Rockwellesque.

Re: Election Day Diary

Will be heading out about 9:30 and hoping to be in after the early voters. Being retired is great that both I and my wife can pick the less busy times at the polls.

Looking forward to watching the results as they come in and tomorrow more of the exit polling information.

It certainly has NOT been a conventional election cycle for sure.

Tomorrow the nation will have elected a new POTUS. God Bless America !

Re: Election Day Diary

Got to the polling place at about 6:50. There were about 40 people already in line. In the 10 minutes before the polls opened, the line had more than doubled.

It was quiet, cold, with a few good mornings thrown out by people who knew each other.

Mrs. Lager was taking pictures of the kid and posting them to facebook.

There were two nondescript middle aged men standing to the side of the line against the wall. I overheard them talking.

The one guy asked the other what they were supposed to do. The other guy said they would hand out Trump stickers and make sure things were on the "up and up", although he also said he didn't expect any problems.

The doors opened promptly at 7:00 a.m. My township is broken into three precincts. I am in precinct 1 and it's the biggest one so we get three voting machines.

Precinct 3 gets two voting machines and one was broken so their line was starting to back up almost immediately.

I was 27th to vote in my precinct.

My daughter went into the booth with my wife. As my wife came out of booth, there were tears in her eyes. I was a sweet moment. She told the kid on the way out that she hoped she would always remember this day.

We went across the street to the 7-11 to get our free coffee. There was this lady there, had to be in her 80s, barely five feet tall, who was telling the cashier that she was going to go vote and that he needed to make sure he voted and that he needed to Make America Great again.

She then turned and wagged her finger to everyone in line and said forcefully, Make. America. Great. Again.

We left, went home, and now I'm at work.

To be honest, after following the campaign for the last year and a half, the act of pushing a button seems anti-climactic.

Let's hope all poll watchers, self appointed and otherwise, have nothing more than boredom to contend with today.
Keep it classy, America!

Agreed. And since there will always be some issues somewhere, let's keep a sense of proportion and calm and not start screaming that everything is rigged and that the election is invalid.

Susan B Anthony's headstone covered in "I Voted" stickers.

Brings a tear to the eye.
