How Donald Trump Uses the Tax Code in Ways You Can’t

How Donald Trump Uses the
Tax Code in Ways You Can’t

By JEREMY ASHKENAS, GABRIEL J.X. DANCE and GUILBERT GATES    OCT. 7, 2016

The New York Times reported last week that Donald J. Trump had a $916 million net
operating loss on his 1995 tax returns, which could have legally allowed him to avoid federal
income taxes for nearly two decades. That figure may seem startling, but wealthy real estate
developers like Mr. Trump enjoy federal income tax breaks largely unavailable to typical homeowners.

The fact that Trump used our tax laws to his advantage like thousands of other taxpayer also do is in itself not such a bad thing.  But in Trump's case it is his braggadocious personality that grates on people even though many now know of the millions upon millions of dollars he lost on those real estate developments. Saying he's a smart business man is so far from the truth.  Trump being Trump he will no doubt go to his grave still bragging about how smart he was.

I agree. Instead of bragging about how smart he is, Trump would be better to say that
1. He paid little to no taxes because the system is rigged to favor business activity over us poor schmucks who live on earned income, and
2 Show us a plan to fix it.
Instead of saying that he wants to make the country great again on my dime, Trump should talk about how he can make everyone pay their fair share.
