Protests and riots in Charlotte
2nd night of riots in Charlotte, NC that is turning violent.
Just saw a newsperson from CNN get "knocked over" on purpose by a protester/rioter. Disgusting behavior is the only way to describe the actions of most of these people

A riot is the language of the unheard.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Social media is spreading the lie that he had only a book! A city under mob rule and the National Guard has been activated.

Actually, "social media" has talked about the claim that he was reading a book vs the police account that he wouldn't drop a gun.
In other words they are reporting both sides until a complete investigation is concluded.
Nothing wrong in that.
We should pay more attention to what leads to riots if we wish to prevent them

It's interesting to note that Virginia is an 'open carry' state isn't it? So, if a couple of black guys carrying guns approach a police officer, maybe to ask for directions or something, would it be reasonable for the officer to assume these black guys are a threat and the officer could whack them?
Just thinking about the ramifications of 'open carry' laws.

I'm of the vintage to have a very clear memory of the 1969 riots in York.
Ferguson, Baltimore, and now, Charlotte trigger flashbacks. The key difference is that York's riots were NOT precipitated by a police action shooting. The uncanny similarity to Charlotte is that York's was triggered by a malicious rumor which was ultimately proven false---but only after two very innocent lives were lost.

I don't think that anyone here is taking a pro-riot stance or is suggesting that they solve anything.
Riots are spontaneous outpourings of rage. People get hurt. People get killed. Property is damaged. Often the most damage occurs in the areas most impoverished. Tensions get exacerbated.
So, yea, riots are a bad thing.
So, why do riots occur, and how can we prevent them? I've heard the few bad apples explanation, the outside agitators argument, and the irresponsible media argument. All of these arguments have an element of truth to them. But, they don't seem - to me anyway - to get at The Truth.
An outside agitator is going to have little success inciting a riot in my neighborhood. "A riot? Tonite? I've got garden club".
You and I have all seen news reports that turned out to be false. We didn't riot.
Yea, there are a few bad apples causing violence. But there are a lot of people on the street in Charlotte.
Why?
Perhaps, just maybe, they are legitimately frustrated. I mean, in NJ they can manage to arrest an armed terrorist without killing him, but in Tulsa an unarmed black man wandering around his SUV gets killed by police.
People go crazy because a guy takes a knee during the national anthem, but no one seems to care if Eric Garner gets choked to death by a policeman while being arrested for selling cigarettes.
Maybe the system seems rigged to some. Maybe they don't feel that they have a voice.
It seems like every time that one of these incidents happen that people spend most of their time assuring themselves that the protestors are wrong, or bad people.
Maybe if we tried to understand, instead of trying to be right.
