10 unbelievable revelations from the Kathleen Kane trial

The perjury trial of former PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane has been going on for the past week or so. What I had thought would have been a fairly mundane case of the technical aspects of what constitutes "leaked" grand jury testimony has actually turned out to be something pretty crazy (although could also be considered fairly typical of a Pennsylvania politician's misconduct.)

BillyPenn.com does a good job of capturing the highlights. You've got "Revenge Text Messages", planted newspaper stories, an unaccounted trip by Kane to Haiti, and an AG deputy possibly committing fraud against a judge.

But the real shocker is Kane's deep trip into political paranoia......

Apparently Kane was concerned that even some of her closest friends — whom she allegedly trusted with SECRET GRAND JURY INFORMATION — were out to get her. Morrow testified that one day in August 2014 after the Daily News story about an investigation in NAACP leader J. Whyatt Mondesire had already dropped, he planned to grab lunch with Kane at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. This was not out of the ordinary.

What was unusual was the pre-lunch treatment. Rather than meeting her at the Bellevue like usual, he was picked up by her driver and taken to a parking garage where the driver confiscated his cellphone and “wanded” him down to be sure he wasn’t wearing a wire. Then, lunch. Kane told him she had become aware a grand jury investigation was launched into who leaked what to the Daily News.

“She apologized to me for the security detail,” Morrow testified, “and said it’s a new office protocol.”

Something similar happened to him in October of that year while he says they were in the process of concocting a lie in order to cover up the alleged leak. He said Kane asked him to meet her in a park in Dunmore, near Scranton, where she was living at the time.

When he got to the park, a driver picked up Morrow, drove him to his house, took his phone, wallet and keys and “wanded” him again for a wire. Then, he drove him back to the park, had him get out of the car and then get into another car that Kane was in so the two of them could have a conversation. Morrow described her as “frantic.”

“She was just like, ‘I need help, I need help, I need someone to help me,’” Morrow testified. “I said ‘I’ll do whatever you need me to do. Tell me what you want me to do.’ There was no answer.”

Kane's attorneys have not put up a defense in the trial, last week announcing that they would not call any witnesses. Closing arguments are to begin today.

The news just broke that after four and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Kane guilty of all charges.

It was pretty clear a long time ago that she was guilty of these charges, and the evidence presented at trial only confirmed what was known.

She should have resigned two years ago, hopefully she will be removed from office ASAP.  Time for PA to move past this shameful time period of her in charge of the AG's office

Gov Wolf has already released a statement asking Kane to resign.

Hope she does the right thing.

The sad thing in all of this is that Kane will likely be remembered just a much for this as her unearthing of the good old boys Porngate scandal.

Yeah. Kane had the opportunity to be a historic figure in PA politics. The first woman AG. The first democratic AG.

Unfortunately, she let her pettiness get in the way. It's a shame.

For what it's worth, per Tarnation's comment, I don't think she sees a jail cell and I'm not sure she should to be honest. She'll lose her law license and I think that's damage enough.

As a woman I must agree with Lager's comments.  It saddens me to see Kathleen Kane destroy her political career and more importantly, her opportunity to practice in her legal profession.  I'm hopeful she's given at least a sentence of public service to help the less fortunate.  Even though she will be unable to practice law she still maintains the knowledge of the law and able to do so much good.

I've met a couple of those "good old boys" on several occasions.  Yes, they were "boys" in the sense that the used very, very poor judgement by using work computers to circulate inappropriate emails.  They weren't the first--about a decade ago a bunch of PennDOT supervisors did the same thing, costing some of them their jobs, including Charlie Webb who had done an outstanding job as maintenance supervisor for York County.

Judges should have known better.

Nevertheless, some of these "old boys" were really good.

Michael Eakin was the District Attorney of Cumberland County before being elected to the bench.   His crowning achievement as DA was the successful prosecution of the cold blooded robbers who fatally shot New Cumberland Borough Police Officer Willis Cole (a York County resident) when he interrupted their jewelery store heist.   They're serving life sentences without possibility of parole.

Seamus McCaffery instituted the "Veteran's Stadium" court when he was on the bench in Philly.  The instant justice dispensed right at the field tamed the behavior of the drunken fans who had brought nationwide noteriety to Eagles' home games.

They fell on their swords.

Now Kane has done the same.

She was very vindictive and brought down anyone who questioned her judgment or challenged her positions.

Who knows what her final hours in office will bring, how many files shredded, how many hard drives wiped and drilled.
