Who said this ? Well none other than Mr Bill O'Reilly who just wanted to set the historical record straight on the fact that they were "well fed and had decent housing". How nice. Ignoring the main fact that we as a country used primarily slaves to build our own White House and other main buildings in Washington.
He deservedly caught "Hell" over these remarks. I never liked Bill and found him to be full of himself and his ideas. It is amazing just how nearsighted he is over the whole thing. But perhaps is is intentional. I don't know or really care. It just underscored my dislike of the man.
BTW, here is the SNOPES Fact Check about the Slaves Building the White House.
Through research, we’ve been able to determine that just about 400 of the more than 600 people who worked on the construction of the Capitol were African American slaves.

Nothing shocks me out of O'Reilly's mouth. I've never been a fan. He is a shock jock type guy, who's role is to get headlines and ratings, and it does work. I guarantee his show will have a spike in ratings after this.
The funny thing is, he hates both Trump and Clinton, and they don't like him much either.

O' Reilly needs to quietly fade away.

This is what blind partisanship does to the mind. O'Reilly reflexively defends slavery - yea, slavery - simply because a member of the other "team" derided it.
What the hell was he thinking?
You say;
"yes, slavery was an atrocity".
"Look how far we've come".
And then you proudly remind folks, " I am a member of the party of Lincoln".
It''s not difficult, Bill, you idiot.

Bill-O doesn't really care for factual information. All one has to do is read one of his ghost written 'historical' novels, or his show, or one of his tirades against anyone who dares to disagree with or question his personal point of view.
Here he tells people how wrong they are:
