US Catholic voters lean toward Clinton, survey shows

US Catholic voters lean toward Clinton, survey shows

July 14, 2016
American Catholic voters lean strongly toward Hillary Clinton in this year's presidential contest, according to a new Pew Forum survey.

The Pew poll found that Clinton held a 56-39% advantage over Donald Trump among Catholic voters. That 17% margin was markedly different from the results of a similar poll in the last presidential race, when then-Senator Barack Obama was virtually even with Mitt Romney among Catholic voters in June 2012.

However, Clinton's margin among Catholic voters was entirely attributable to a huge (77-16%) advantage among Hispanic Catholics. Among white Catholics, Trump had a slight (50-46) edge.

Among all voters surveyed, Pew found that Clinton had a 51-42% lead. Trump enjoyed his best results among white Evangelical voters, who gave him a massive 78-17% advantage; Clinton did best with black Protestants, who broke even more dramatically (89-8%) in her favor.

Among voters who attend church services weekly, Pew found that Trump had a slight advantage: 49- 45%. But among Catholics who attend Mass weekly, Clinton led by 57-38%.

When asked which questions they considered most important in the presidential campaign, Catholics provided answers that did not differ significantly from the overall national sample.

That White Evangelicals would put him up as a figure to throw their weight behind is almost laughable in so many respects.

Not half so laughable as their one-time adulation of Ted Cruz the adulterer.

I think this sums up Trump best as to his Christianity!

Very good article.

Keep in mind, however, that if we are to measure Presidential (and potentially Presidential) piety on the basis of church attendance the current POTUS would score very low, as would the Democratic contender unless she is using the pulpit--and I mean that in the most perjorative sense of the word--on the campaign trail.

George W. Bush would score very well...probably the most faithful since Eisenhower.

I agree that church attendance is not the measure of a true Christian.

The article itself laid out the many things that make me wonder how he can be embraced at all by Evangelicals outside of the Church attendance.

Evangelicals are a strange matrix.   There are some who are "cultural conservatives" (anti abortion, anti gay marriage, etc); sometimes they overlap with those who are social/economic justice activists (think Sojourners); there are a few who are both, but there are fewer who are neither.

Plotted on an x/y axis with 0 -10 scales most would fall in the upper left and lower right quadrants, a smattering in the upper right, and almost none in the lower left.

If this pans out Hilliary Clintons's announcement of Tim Kane as her running mate will prove to be an even greater choice.  Kane is Catholic, trained by Jesuits and took a year off Harvard Law to work with Jesuits in South America.

Sadly;

This is a 4 1/2 month old article.
It describes not polling of Catholics in the coming Trump-Clinton matchup, but rather Trump's primary victories in Michigan and Mississippi over Republican opponents.
And It describes his primary vote totals  with evangelicals in those states only, and  vs other republicans, NOT Sec Clinton.
