Uprising in the Rust Belt

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/06/coal-country-democrats-donald-trump-2016-213988

I found this to be an interesting read about the changing voting patterns of blue collar, union workers.

Thanks for posting Brady

Re: Uprising in the Rust Belt

I suppose they could, but neither Trump or Hillary can make those jobs come back again.

The pied piper can say all he wants to them about Making America Great again, but he basically has nothing to offer but what P.T. Barnum had to offer.

Re: Uprising in the Rust Belt

It will come down to this; will a group of white working class people longing for an idealized past give themselves over to a carnival barker? Will they, in their fear allow themselves to be swindled?

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Yes, but it is also interesting to know how we got to this point where generations of loyal Democrats are now leaving in droves.

The reason why some are voting for Trump and others are considering it is because they are frustrated with establishment politicians and Dems in particular.  People are tired of hearing talk from politicians and want to send a message by electing an outsider.

In the article, the people acknowledged that Trump isn't an ideal candidate and does and says things they don't like, but their anger and frustration towards the establishment is greater at this point.

I think this explains, why after everything idiotic and outrageous that Trump has said, he isn't far behind Hillary in swing state polls.  You would think after a really bad month she should be destroying him in the polls, but it isn't happening.  Her negatives are too high for her to pull away.  If Trump ever gets his act together, and that is a big if, I wouldn't be surprised if he wins.

Re: Uprising in the Rust Belt

Not just democrats. More and more from both traditions are becoming independents. I think that "frustration" with the Rs is very high as well.

The Rust belt scenario is plausible. I've also seen scenarios in which Trump's unpopularity put some red states in play.

BTW, I like the understated characterization, that Trump is not an ideal candidate.
Oh Yeah, I concur with that !

I am going to give myself some kudos, I think this post back in June nailed exactly what happened and why Trump won last night.

Likely.

But what happens when Trump cannot bring those same jobs back (which I am dubious that he can). When jobs come back they are generally mechanized and the old skills are normally left in the dirt. I have seen it in plant after plant.
