It's not a tax.
YORK COUNTY, Pa. -
Anyone who registered their vehicle in York County, Pennsylvania will soon be slapped with a $5 vehicle fee.
The fee was approved today by the York County Commissioners. They say the money will fund the repairs of almost 100 bridges in the county.
The fee is expected to go into effect in October.
Thanks York County Commissioners. Your ability to plan ahead is what makes you great. You're looking out for us.
Why don't they let the taxpayers vote on this?
How do they determine if a vehicle is registered in York County?
How can I arrange to register my vehicle in Adams or Lancaster counties?

Yeah, I got my registration renewal for my car last month and I see the $5 surcharge Bucks County slapped onto my annual fee. Asked my neighbors and friends and nobody knew about this. Our county commishes totally slipped that one by us.
Upon reflection, I'm actually ok with it. Nothing gets done in Harrisburg from a budget standpoint. We're 15 days out from the end of the 2015-16 commonwealth fiscal year and raise your hand if you think the governor and legislature will have next year's budget done by the end of the month.
So if the county wants to ding me $15 a year and it means that the funds go directly to my county for roads and bridges, I can't complain about that too much, so long as the state registration fee remains flat.
As far as registering your car in Lancaster or Adams, rongone, I think it's just a matter of time until we see that show up in those counties too.

Here was the article from April of this year about the fee.

I have to ask, how did 66% of the county's bridges fall into such disrepair? If state funds and county funds collected annually from taxpayers were designated for the purpose of road repair, where was that money spent? It obviously wasn't aimed at the county bridges despite the admonished cries of the county engineer.
My concern is that in a couple of years $5/vehicle won't be enough and the commissioners will be back in our pockets for more. And, is it every vehicle registered in the county, or are some municipal and business fleets exempted? Is the fee the same for a large truck or a bus the same as a private car?
Lastly, I don't think the commissioners did a very good job of letting the public know about this tax or fee or whatever they want to call it (for obvious reasons). Their smiling faces on local news programs after they passed the tax this morning (with only one person showing up to voice opposition) was an obvious expression of self satisfaction for a "job well done".

How long before we start throwing things in Lake Redman?
As I recall, a war was fought over crap like this.
Taxation with representation doesn't seem to be any more desirable.

Whoever is collecting whatever money I wish some would be spent on repaving 83 between York and Strinestown. The road surface including ramps is as bad as any I've ever seen in a long time. There are patches on patches on top of more patches all making for a very rough, tire splitting drive. Shameful in 2016.

The roads all over the county are a joke.
The intersection in front of York Hospital is so badly damaged you can see the old concrete paving from 60 years ago in places. Vehicles have to creep through because it's like driving over a dozen speed bumps.
It's been this way for years. If they're going to rob us at least they could do something!

It's something I noticed on the way back here from Florida. It seems the higher the taxation and the bigger the budget, the worse the roads are.
There was some paving in South Carolina that was so smooth you couldn't hear any road noise.
Our roads are a national joke.

Have you been in the left turn lane off east bound Market St. onto rt. 124? There are so many deep ripples in the road bed one literally gets jostled inside their car. Then there's the very short E. Market St. exit ramp from south bound 83 that takes you to Belmont St.--even worse if that's possible and it is. These are not major repairs for short distances so why can't these be repaired. Both have been this bad also for years.

The SB 83 ramp that connects to Belmont St. was repaved about two weeks ago.
You lost me on the Market St. /124 comment....those roads run parallel and do not intersect.
