Just reacting to the title, haven't we seen this movie? This hand wringing seems to be a pertpetual indulgement by journalists.
The GOP wasn't going to support Trump. Now they are rapidly coming together.
In May of 2008 lots of Hillary supporters said that they wouldn't vote for Obama. But they did.
Parties' come together when the primaries finally end.

Parties do, but not all their voters.
As evidenced in the two elections they discussed in the article where an "outsider", progressive candidate challenged the "insider" Democratic nominee until the convention and the "insider" lost.
