Very much worth a read from one of the best NYT tech writers......

<Ugh, I forgot you can copy and paste NYT articles anymore.>

It basically says that Facebook is the most influential source of news in the world today, that major media organizations like the Times are turning to Facebook to get its news articles out in the public, and that while Facebook doesn't appear to be doing anything unethical as it pertains to news aggregation (it's mostly done through computer algorithms) but that Facebook certainly has the power to influence the news.

I recommend reading it.

Well, IF our general public is depending on Facebook for their news then that explains a LOT !

"Facebook is the world’s most influential source of news.

That’s true according to every available measure of size — the billion-plus people who devour its News Feed every day, the cargo ships of profit it keeps raking in, and the tsunami of online traffic it sends to other news sites."

Meh,,,, I'm not buying it.

I visit my FB page daily. I never read, much less "devoured" the news feed. Didn't really notice it until this kerfuffle. How did they look at traffic and distinguish between devouring the news feed, as opposed to just checking it  to see what your high school buddy you haven't seen in 25 years ate for dinner last night?

Sure, FB makes a profit. How do I know that it is because it is an influential news source, as a opposed to a medium for exchanging highly entertaining, yet vaguely disturbing cat videos.

Remember though Goose, you (and me) come from a pre-Facebook generation. We've known newspapers and then in the 90's came along Drudge, and then early 2000's came blogs and then in the late 2000s comes Facebook.

Assuming that most people don't start consuming deeply political news until their early 20's (and I'd argue maybe later than that) you theoretically could argue that a person born in 1990 has gotten the overwhelming majority of news from a social media application and what's the most popular social media application in the world? Facebook.

As an aside, there might be something to this thought that Facebook has a great amount of power in news dissemination as it's being reported thatZuck is going to meet personally with "conservative leaders" to talk about this.

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pledged to meet with conservative leaders as his company probes damaging allegations of political bias in how it selects the most important news for its 1.6 billion users.

"This week, there was a report suggesting that Facebook contractors working on Trending Topics suppressed stories with conservative viewpoints," Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post. "We take this report very seriously and are conducting a full investigation to ensure our teams upheld the integrity of this product."

Facebook has found no evidence to back up the claims but Zuckerberg said he would take steps to address problems if any are found.

“In the coming weeks, I'll also be inviting leading conservatives and people from across the political spectrum to talk with me about this and share their points of view,” Zuckerberg wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday night.

Zuckerberg was the third Facebook executive in less than a week to address the political bias charges that have drawn heated reaction from Capitol Hill.

His statement came after Facebook on Thursday released the editorial guidelines it uses to determine which news articles are featured in its Trending Topics feature. The guidelines appeared to contradict previous statements from company officials on how much influence a small team of news editors has in the process.

Executive Tom Stock said Monday the company does not insert stories "artificially" into the Trending Topics feature but the guidelines clearly state they can. Stocky also said Facebook does not allow the editors to give preference to one news outlet over another but the guidelines show Facebook measures if a news article is legitimate by comparing it to 10 news outlets including USA TODAY, CNN and Fox News.

Justin Osofsky, vice president of Facebook’s global operations, said Thursday the editorial guidelines are "checks and balances" to ensure that news articles featured in Trending Topics are in fact newsworthy.

“Facebook does not allow or advise our reviewers to systematically discriminate against sources of any political origin, period,” Osofsky said in a statement.

Facebook released the internal documents after they were leaked to the Guardian

"it's being reported that Zuck is going to meet personally with "conservative leaders" to talk about this."

I'd pay the 2 Bitcoin admission fee to attend those talks. Aside from the age difference, the technical understanding and computer competence of Zuckerberg has to be a world apart from those so-called 'conservative leaders'. Those guys will come out of the meeting convinced Zuckerberg was speaking in tongues . . . Or maybe some Arabic dialogue.
