Sanders: Clinton team thinks race 'is over. They're wrong'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that his primary bid against Hillary Clinton was far from over, pointing to his victory in Indiana and strength in upcoming races as a sign of his durability in the presidential campaign.

"I know that the Clinton campaign thinks this campaign is over. They're wrong," Sanders said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from New Albany, Indiana. "Maybe it's over for the insiders and the party establishment but the voters today in Indiana had a different idea."

Sanders spoke to the AP after he defeated Clinton in Indiana's primary, predicting that he would achieve "more victories in the weeks to come" in West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon and California. The Vermont senator acknowledged that he faced an "uphill climb" to the Democratic nomination but said he was "in this campaign to win and we are going to fight until the last vote is cast." Sanders' win in Indiana likely won't make much of a dent in Clinton's lead of more than 300 pledged delegates.

Clinton is still more than 90 percent of the way to clinching the Democratic nomination when the count includes superdelegates, the elected officials and party leaders who are free to support the candidate of their choice. Sanders said in the interview that he would be the best-positioned Democrat to take on Republican Donald Trump, who is now the likely Republican nominee after Texas Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out of the race. "There is nothing more I would like than to take on and defeat Donald Trump, someone who must never become president of this country."Sanders said he had no intention to drop out of the race and rejected the notion that his criticism of Clinton's record on issues like trade, campaign finance and the Iraq war would help Trump."There is nothing that I have said about Secretary Clinton that the Republicans are not more than aware of.

They must have dozens and dozens of opposition researchers," Sanders said. "They will go into areas that I have chosen not to go into. They will be talking about emails. They will be talking about the Clinton foundation."Sanders said he wants to debate Clinton in California later this month, noting that both campaigns had reached an agreement in principle to hold the forum in the nation's largest state.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

Re: Sanders: Clinton team thinks race 'is over. They're wrong'

With all due respect to Bernie, people in the know aren't buying it.

From the FiveThirtyEight

Right now, Sanders looks like he’ll earn about five to 10 more delegates than Clinton in Indiana. That means Clinton will have an elected delegate lead by the end of the evening of around 280 to 285 delegates. In order to catch Clinton in the elected delegate count, Sanders would need to win over 65 percent of the remaining elected delegates. That’s actually higher than it was before Indiana voted.

The Washington Post
But even if you look at the math precisely the way Sanders is asking us to — and unquestioningly grant him the mathematical concessions he is requesting — he is still all but certain not to win the nomination.

Re: Sanders: Clinton team thinks race 'is over. They're wrong'

I look at all of this differently.  Clinton, Trump, etc. were running campaigns while Bernie is leading a movement.  If Clinton or Trump get elected president, the movement won't die.  Bernie has had an impact especially with the under-35 crowd, and someday some of those people will be entering politics themselves.

That will be the barometer I'll use to measure the success of the movement.  Most major shifts in American history began with a movement of some kind, not necessarily started by a president.  I'm actually optimistic about what may happen a few years from now when the dust clears and the mud-slinging is over.

I'll grant you that.
But, I will suggest that the Sanders movement has a better opportunity of coming to fruition with Clinton in the White House rather than Trump. He should keep that in mind.

I'm almost certain he will.  We also have to remember with Clinton in the White House, his position and power in the Senate will be greater.  I'm sure he knows that.

Re: Sanders: Clinton team thinks race 'is over. They're wrong'

The race for actually winning the nomination is basically over.

As Fred has stated, he is still in this to try and get his message out and hope Hillary fights for some of his priorities (although I have my doubts she will do that).

She better if she wants Bernie supporters to vote for her.  Bernie and I will be watching.

I think that Bernie has helped shape to conversation and that Clinton will move towards him.
I'm more of a centrist, but I can be allies with the Bernie wing on some issues.
