Hillary Clinton questioned Bernie Sanders’ loyalty to the Democratic Party in an interview on the Politico podcast "Off Message," saying she’s not even sure her Democratic presidential opponent is a Democrat.
“He’s a relatively new Democrat,” Clinton said. “I’m not even sure he is one. He's running as one. So I don't know quite how to characterize him. I'll leave that to him.”
Hillary Clinton Says 'There’s No Indication' Sanders Would Help Elect More Democrats “But I know there's a big difference between Democrats and Republicans, and I know that Senator Sanders spends a lot of time attacking my husband, attacking President Obama, you know, calling President Obama weak and disappointing, and actually making a move in 2012 to recruit somebody to run a primary against him,”
Message to Hillary: Not feelin' the Bern, Ms. Clinton? Bernie is a progressive first, a Democrat second. If he ran as an independent, would you even give a rat's carcass about his message? Bernie caucases with your team. Maybe you should pay attention to what he has to say.

I understand her point. Sanders had only been a declared Democrat since 2015. Likely one of the reasons he did this is his contemplating to run for POTUS. It is a lot easier to run under a current party vs running as an Independent. Each state has different requirements IF you want to enter the Presidential race. Thus declaring himself a Democrat eliminated all of those hurdles. Even his own Senate Web site still refers to him as an Independent (see below)
