Let's look at the Republican Side
The front runner Donald Trump who has a pretty good shot at being the nominee has this as his political background:Trump's party affiliation has changed a number of times over the years. Until 1987, he was a Democrat. Then he was a Republican from 1987 to 1999. He then switched to the Reform Party from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2009 he was a Democrat again. Then he switched to the Republican Party again from 2009 to 2011 but then to an independent from 2011 to 2012, and finally he returned to the Republican Party in 2012, where he has remained.
Let's look at the Democrat Side
The interesting thing here is NOT Hillary. It is Sanders who is really not a Democrat at all. He is just running beneath their banner. His affiliation is that he caucuses with them, but he is NOT a registered Democrat.
So, the ultimate irony would be IF Donald Trump who cannot decide which party he wants to be winds up running against Bernie Sanders who is NOT a Democrat and IF Bernie won (lwhich the polls predict would most certainly happen) then a non-Democrat would have won running as a Democrat against a person who over the years cannot decide which party he really is aligned with.
What a hoot that would be.
