The link between the heartburn drugs and dementia is not yet clinically definitive, but recent findings send up caution flags for their use (and more likely overuse) of these drugs especially in the elderly.

A lot of that heartburn can be eliminated or at least reduced by cutting out the food that is most likely to cause it. Eating a steady diet of greasy and fatty foods, over eating, and eating the wrong foods or eating anything before retiring for the night is asking for trouble. Better to change eating habits and be rid of the pills.

You are exactly right. There are some people with specific disorders of the esophagus that make heartburn a big medical problem.
However, for the vast majority of us, this is a "lifestyle" disease. Sensible eating habits and maintaining a healthy weight would be much better than going the medication route.
