US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loan

Using US Marshals to collect old federal student loans? What the heck is going on?

US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Believe it or not, the US Marshals Service in Houston is arresting people for not paying their outstanding federal student loans.

Paul Aker says he was arrested at his home last week for a $1500 federal student loan he received in 1987.

He says seven deputy US Marshals showed up at his home with guns and took him to federal court where he had to sign a payment plan for the 29-year-old school loan.

Congressman Gene Green says the federal government is now using private debt collectors to go after those who owe student loans.

Green says as a result, those attorneys and debt collectors are getting judgements in federal court and asking judges to use the US Marshals Service to arrest those who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

Our reliable source with the US Marshal in Houston say Aker isn't the first and won't be the last.

They have to serve anywhere from 1200 to 1500 warrants to people who have failed to pay their federal student loans.

Hmmm.  1987 to 2016 seems much more time needed to repay that old loan.  Glad to see scofflaws being brought into court.

I'm a little suspect of this story. It seems this one guy was arrested based on everything I can tell through a Google news search.

And why would the feds arrest you when they have garnishments, the ability to wreck your credit, and have a law that says you can't erase the debt through bankruptcy.

I'm calling foul on this story.

Agree.

Also agree with Lager that this story is a little suspect somehow.

It does seem very strange to be "arrested" for an old school debt.

Somewhat off topic and perhaps good for a topic unto itself is the topic of the exponentially growing student debt in the US which now stands at approx. $1.3 Trillion dollars (and I believe the bulk of it are federal student loans)

Re: US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loan

Turns out the story was true. It made NBC Nightly News.

The guy was arrested. He did admit that he owed the federal student loan.

Court records showed that he was supposed to go to court all the way back to 2012.

For the U.S. Marshall's service, they said arresting people for student loans is very rare and that Aker had "escalated" the situation, but didn't explain how.
