Gas tax: Where is Pa. compared to other states?

Gas prices fluctuate wildly in the United States, and there are many factors that can cause prices to swing. One of those factors is taxes, which vary between U.S. regions and largely account for the price differences between states.Which state has the highest average gas tax, according to a 24/7 Wall St. report? Pennsylvania.

It's leading the nation with an average tax of 50.4 cents per gallon. In Alaska, the average gallon of gas is taxed at 12.3 cents, the lowest in the nation. To compare taxes across the U.S., 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the combined state and average local gas taxes per gallon in each state from estimates provided by the American Petroleum Institute.

Pennsylvania
 Effective gas tax: 50.4 cents
 Gas price: $2.00 (9th highest)
Number of petroleum refineries: 4 (tied-9th highest)
Number of licensed drivers: 8,896,590 (5th highest)
Annual vehicle miles traveled per capita: 7,721 (5th lowest)

And some of the worst streets and highways on which to travel!  Outside of the turnpike widenings we see little progress for all that gas tax money.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike has the highest per-mile toll road in the nation.

I'm of such vintage as to recall the 6t0's bumper stickers:  "Pennsylvania:  Land of Taxes".

Plus ce change plus ce la meme chose

Yep.  When I first got E-ZPASS nearly 16 years ago I allotted $35.00 on a credit card for new amount to be added and it lasted almost most forever  Now, since all the recent toll increases a trip to Pittsburgh to and from the H'burg West exit nearly wipes out that $35.00.
