Now the Groundhogs disagree?
I think Phil has it right.... going into the winter is over mode.
More winter? Spring nears? Groundhogs disagree
No one seems to agree on anything today. The Pennsylvania budget. Democrats. Republicans. York. Lancaster.
And now, our normally reliable groundhogs are embroiled in debate, leaving Pennsylvanians and people across the U.S. wondering whether spring is coming or if winter will maintain its cold grip.In the time-honored tradition seen every year on Groundhog Day, furry weather whisperer Punxsutawney Phil and the sight of his shadow determines whether we'll see more snow or the arrival of spring. This year, Punxsutawney Phil cast a positive message: Spring is nigh.
Not in York County, though. Around 7:15, Dover Doug saw his shadow. Six more weeks of winter. Over in Manchester Township, Susquehanna Sherman also predicted six more weeks of winter.

Today is the midpoint between Winter Solstice and Vernal Equinox--45 days or roughly six weeks. Beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The only question is what will characterize the weather in these remaining weeks. Brilliant sunshine, as today, is typically found in the wake of cold fronts so the association of sunny day with "more winter" has a little meteorological evidence.
Some of the heaviest snows of my lifetime have occurred in Feburary and March: Mid February 1978 dropped 18 plus inches in York; likewise in 2003 at roughly that same "Presidents' Day" period. And we won';t soon forget the March 1993 "Superstorm" which dropped 24 inches.
The second half of an El Nino winter is usually quite the ride.

My little front porch is protected on three sides of the house where the temperature can reach as high as 75° in that bright sunshine in January and February. I decided I don't need to go cruising or spend a week in Florida this time of year. If the sun is shining that's where I am sitting late morning after returning home from the gym.

Beware the "Onion Snow".
Up here they are talking about tapping the maple trees a week earlier than usual.
