It's worse than I thought it would be

I don't know how things are where you are, but this snowstorm is worse than I thought it was going to be ........... at least where I live.

Re: It's worse than I thought it would be

Got over 30" here at our house Fred. And that's not taking into consideration the drifting. Glad I filled up my wood bin and split and stacked more wood in a wheelbarrow right outside the back door. Keeping the fire going in the wood stove is a nice way to keep warm and create a cozy ambiance in our family room. Talked to our daughter in the Brogue and she says they've gotten out the tractor with front loader to clear out up to the barn to care for the horses and plan on plowing the lanes around their farm with the tractor, skid steer loader, and pickup truck with plow tomorrow. If they get all that done, our son-in-law will come down and plow our lane. No problem as far as we are concerned . . . We have warmth, food, and wine.

Re: It's worse than I thought it would be

I won't be able to shovel out to my favorite measuring spot until tomorrow, but my "unofficial" measurement is 28 inches, the final inch falling in the past two hours, which is the slowest rate of snowfall since last evening.

This is the worst for a single storm.  But just six years ago we had the twin blizzards of February 5-6 and 9-10 which dumped 24.5 and 21.0 inches, respectively; and in 1996 we had the January 7-8 blizzard with 22.6 inches followed by an additional 10 inches on January 12.

Those storm pairings are why my law of the Medes and the Persians for snow removal is "always make room for one more".   No forecaster has a storm on the horizon for January 28 (four days out)....at least, not yet.

Did the first removal  shortly after sunrise today, and it was awful because ithe snow was deeper than what my blade could handle and almost higher than the snowthrower.   Second removal was started at 4 PM and it went much, much better, even though I was finishing with headlights racing deep dusk.  Even if this gentle rate continues to midnight tomorrow at sunup will be pretty easy.

Then I'll probably lend a hand to the neighbors who foolishly waited until after all the snow had stopped--after I've made "room for one more", of course.

Doesn't seem that bad to me.  We got 30 inches, meh.  Slow down, take your time and dig out.  It's just frozen water, we've had much worse.  I keep hearing that this is so much worse than the handful of blizards that we've had in the past 30 years.  Doesn't seem as bad to me.  You just have to chill out, take it as it comes, and take your time cleaning up, no rush.

I hate snow, but one cool thing about snow storms like this is that it slows life down for a bit.  It's pretty nice, and I think we need more of it in our lives.

Re: It's worse than I thought it would be

Snow I don't mind but the blowing is another bag.  If I had to get out of my house in an emergency I would be unable to.  I've a 5' drift across the front entrance, the windows in front and rear have at least that much blown against them and I'm sure the garage door also does, and there's no where to go.  I'm only 5' 1'' so it would be pretty difficult for me to get out.

With the snow ended, the clouds retreated, and the moon nearly full the night is spectacular, almost illumined as twilight.

I could almost expect to see "a minature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer".

We didn't get a flake.
The local ski resort people are crying.
All a matter of perspective, isn't it?

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Well, basically I hate winter and winter hates me.  I guess you could say the feeling is mutual.

Re: It's worse than I thought it would be

I think it's a matter of which way the wind is blowing during a storm like this.  My entire house is engulfed in snow.  At 5' 1" I could not walk out my front door, the garage door, climb out any windows in the front, rear or side of the building.  My big regret at the moment is I cannot be out doors to capture all this in photos!  Our street has yet to be plowed so it makes little sense to begin clearing until the piles left by the snow plow can be cleared away.   Help from a neighbor will then arrive.
