Yesterday while Sarah Palin was endorsing the Donald, she pulled out a familiar rightwing trope.
"They've been wearing this political correctness kind of like a suicide vest."
For some time now, Republicans have escalated their attacks on liberal dogma – including college speech codes, bans on hate speech, exclusionary language, trigger warnings and sensitivity training. They've ridiculed liberals on this issue to great effect.
But, is this narrative true? Are conservatives really the clear-headed rejectors of dogma? In reality, there is very little outside the box thinking tolerated by either tribe.
I would argue that republicans are just as "politically correct" as anyone else. They are just "correct" to a different orthodoxy.
Consider a few observations.
On Dec. 2 and Dec. 10, respectively 53 of 54 Senate Republicans and every one of the 241 House Republicans, voted against taking up legislation to ban those on the F.B.I. terror watch list from buying explosives or guns.
Not much diversity of opinion is tolerated on the issue of guns within the GOP tent.
Not only are gun rights sacrosanct, there are conservative prohibitions against the acknowledgment of climate change. It is the official team position.
Opposition to abortion is mandatory.
Immigration reform is rejected. Marco Rubio was forced to do a complete 180 on the isue to save his career as a GOP politician.
And top priority goes to tax cuts. Republicans like to portray themselves as the enemy of deficits and the champions of sensible economic policy. However,,,,,,,Remember in 2012 when during a debate all 8 republican candidates swore that they would reject a budget deal that cut spending $10 for every $1 of tax increases. Reason would have you take the 9/10 of a loaf and be happy. But what you saw, my friends, is the triumph of dogma over reason.
Anyway, I would conclude that, these examples illuminate a conservative orthodoxy that dominates Republican politics. In some way, this orthodoxy is analogous to the liberal orthodoxy known as political correctness.
Violate one orthodoxy and you get called a bigot. Violate the other orthodoxy and you get written off as a RINO.
Two sides of the same coin.
