The Hunley was quite remarkable for its time.
Its only failing was a lack of understanding about oxygen depeletion.

I doubt they were knocked unconscious, but I recall the remains were spread out in such a way that panic didn't set in. They were each at their station so they didn't try scrambling to get out of the hatch.

Here's a pic I wanted to share. Hopefully it's not overwhelmingly large. Graves of the Hunley Crew in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston SC during one of my typical graveyard photography trips. The trees in the cemetery are shrouded in spanish moss, and it has such a dark-but-vibrant gothic feel to the entire property.
