Penn State prediction: Here's what stands in the way of 11-1 and more

The Nittany Lions own the most talent yet under James Franklin. And all but one of their big games are in Beaver Stadium, where they're undefeated the past two years. They also might have the top quarterback combination in the nation. So we know Penn State will be good again in 2018.Being great, though, is quite another thing.

Despite the increased talent and depth, there are important questions that can't yet be answered. They must be by the end of September.Good or great?Everything begins with All-America quarterback Trace McSorley and do-it-all backup Tommy Stevens. They lead an offense that should be more explosive than the ones of the past two years. This offense will have more options — and the program's first top-shelf line in a decade.

They will actually become harder to defend without Saquon Barkley. The offense will grow and carry this team beyond weaknesses on defense, beyond the toughest schedule yet under Franklin.Special teams, once again, will be a timely but overlooked weapon. An 11-1 regular season would get this team to its second Big Ten Championship in three years.Or something even more.

To get there, here are the most important questions to answer before the Ohio State Buckeyes visit on Sept. 29 ...

Yikes, PSU gives up 38 points to Appalachian State!.
Maybe the Penn State D thought that the season starts next week.

Well, a win is a win. But 11-1?

Franklin may have taken the program as far as he can.

Wow.
If Penn State loses to Wisconsin they will be 0 - 4 against the traditional Big Ten elite.

I don't think that Franklin can take Penn State to the top of the mountain.
