Re: Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! What.........................

As a veteran, I can tell you that I have (thus far) enjoyed Memorial Day weekend at my daughter's house in Stone Harbor playing a round of golf with my Son-in-law and grandson, competitive Tiki-Toss In the backyard, having a couple of mudslides and glasses of wine, plus dinners from the grille on the back deck overlooking the bay, and have no guilt nor ill feelings about celebrating the weekend however we choose.

Hope everyone else enjoys the holiday weekend.

Re: Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! What.........................

The religious aspect of Memorial Day seems to be (sadly)slipping away, but there are still a few communities and faith communities for which prayers at a cemetery are part of their tradition.

Tomorrow I will be with the Greek Orthodox community for prayers at a local cemetery which begin thus:

Among the spirits of the righteous perfected in faith where all Your saints repose, give rest also to the souls of Your servants, for You alone are immortal.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

You are our God who descended into Hades and loosened the pains of those who were chained. Grant rest also, O Savior, to the souls of Your servants.

Those who have fallen in battle have had their personal taste of a descent into the Hades of war.  So good to know that even there our God is not absent.

Re: Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! What.........................

Those who have experienced "the hades of war" are thankful for every day they are able to trod upon the earth and for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the rest of us to enjoy the life we continue to live.

PERIOD !

For a party that is characterized as "unpatriotic" and "un-american", you would think they would be smart enough to not post a picture of the President eating ice cream and then say "Happy Memorial Day".  Wouldn't you make sure you don't reinforce the stereotype of your party?  Why potentially upset families who have lost a loved one during combat and give the Republicans ammunition to come at you.

Not very smart.

Why is that party "characterized as unpatriotic and un-american"?

Was it because of George McGovern and the 35 combat missions he flew over Nazi occupied Europe?
Because of JFK and his service in tha pacific?
John Kerry and Silver Star he earned in Vietnam?
Was it Max Cleland who lost both legs and an arm at Khe Sahn?
Was it because of Daniel Inouye, who lost his right arm and won a medal of honor in Italy?
Congressman and ambassador Pete Peterson decorated POW from service in Vietnam?
Jimmy Carter who served 7 years in the navy?
Al Gore, who went to Vietnam?
Charles Rangel: Staff Sgt., Army 1948-52; Bronze Star, Korea ?
John Glenn WWII and Korea?
Tom Harkin Navy?
Chuck Robb, Vietnam?
Jim Webb, Navy Cross in Vietnam?

I could go on.
In fact, I will.
In the 109th Congress only 110 members had served in the military. But of that low number, 59 were Democrats and 51 Republicans.  Source: Congressional Database.
In that same 109th Congress 31 of those Senators had military service, 17 of which were Democratic and 13 were Republican. Source: Congressional Database.

In my opinion, anybody who suggests that democrats are "unpatriotic" and "unamerica" has uttered an outrageous slur, and should be deeply ashamed.

The Democrat Party certainly isn't un-patriotic, I think what Brady Bunch was getting at is that a whole lot of people on the right have that perception, so why give them more ammo? It's much like a lot of people on the left have the perception that the Republican Party are racists and against the middle class.  There's a handful in both parties who are all of those things, but to say an entire party is those things is ridiculous.  But, the average voter isn't that sophisticated, they believe whatever they hear on the garbage that passes for news these days.

That said, I have no problem with the President eating ice cream and posting a photo of it.  We're human, the President is human.  It shows a human side, a fun side.  Not everything has to be doom and gloom and serious business with the President.  And I stand by that for all Presidents.

I apprecite your comments. Let me make clear that I wasn't suggesting that Brady believes such things.
But the thought that democrats need to be careful with symbols lest their patriotism be called into question is repugnant.

True, there are those who indulge in the myth that another party is likely to be racist, or another party un-american.
I condemn them both.
It's time for all of us to start questioning the divisive myths we tell ourselves.
It's an indulgence we can no longer afford.

I wish there were no such thing as political parties.  It is 'us vs. them', and it's really detrimental, middle school behavior.  It should just be candidate vs. candidate, no party involved, vote based on their merits and/or policies.
