Trumps cancel American cemetery visit

Trumps cancel American cemetery visit

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump will not visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial on Saturday afternoon, as planned, because of poor weather.

A White House statement said the planned visit had been "canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather. An American delegation led by Chief of Staff General John Kelly and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joe Dunford will attend on their behalf.”

Trump was originally scheduled to take Marine 1 to the memorial site, situated 50 miles outside Paris. But gray skies and drizzle forced the trip to be called off.

The cemetery contains the graves of nearly 2,300 war dead, many of whom fought in the area in the summer of 1918.

The late change of plans leaves Trump's afternoon in Paris largely empty before he attends a dinner for leaders at the Musée d'Orsay.

Re: Trumps cancel American cemetery visit

Early Saturday, the White House announced Trump and the first lady had scuttled plans, due to bad weather, for their first stop in a series of weekend remembrance activities — a visit to the solemn Aisne Marne American Cemetery, marking the ferocious Battle of Belleau Wood.

It was not completely clear why the Trumps were unable to attend. The cemetery is 50 miles from Paris. So perhaps the president was planning to travel on Marine One, which is occasionally grounded by the Secret Service.

But the sight of dignitaries arriving at other sites outside Paris, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron, led some foreign policy analysts to speculate that the U.S. commander in chief just wasn’t up for it.

“It’s incredible that a president would travel to France for this significant anniversary — and then remain in his hotel room watching TV rather than pay in person his respects to the Americans who gave their lives in France for the victory gained 100 years ago tomorrow,” David Frum, who served as a speechwriter to former president George W. Bush, wrote in a series of tweets. Trump is actually staying at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Paris.

Chief of staff John Kelly managed to brave the 'severe' weather and visit the cemetery

Geez.  Just imagine the Fox 'News' shitstorm if Barack and Michelle Obama would have done the same thing on the 100th Anniversary marking the end of WWI.  But, hey, gray skies and drizzle could really mess up your hair.

Trump is an total embarrassment as a Commander in Chief.

He is a divider of men... not a leader of men.

Re: Trumps cancel American cemetery visit

Hey, his bone spurs were probably acting up due to the damp weather.

As a veteran, I find his decision to not show up “due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather” asign of gross disrespect to veterans and a really weak excuse. He should be ashamed of himself.

Security of the COC has to come first.

If the weather was IFR and contraindicative for helicopter flight, so be it.

The 20/20 of hindsight says that there should have been a contingency plan for a motorcade but those require massive security arranged days in advance...hard enough in your own country but next to impossible on foreign soil.

Nevertheless, it looks VERY bad.

Re: Trumps cancel American cemetery visit

John Kelly was there.
Macron was there.
Merkel was there.
Trudeau was there.
All managed their security needs while honoring the fallen.
Sometimes a leader needs to put himself out there. Those soldiers did.

Nicholas Soames, MP and grandon of Winston Churchll put it best:
"They died with their face to the foe and that pathetic, inadequate @realDonaldTrump couldn’t even defy the weather to pay his respects to The Fallen."

Here's a photo of Obama that makes a nice contrast.
