Tabletop Replacement

I am kicking around an idea in my head.  We have  (at one time) lovely tile and wood tabletop.  Over the years with wear and humidity, the tiles have cracked and have become loose with gaps between the tiles, etc.  The legs of the table are still sturdy and strong.  I'd like to get rid of the tabletop and replace it with a carefree  countertop material using the old legs.

Is it possible to replace the old table top with some kind of laminate countertop?  Is laminate material drillable with ordinary power tools?  Can you get it wider than normal countertop width?    Can you get all four sides of the laminate tabletop with a finished, smooth edge?

My husband is not real handy so I would have to do this myself.  Is this something way past a novice's capabilities?

Re: Tabletop Replacement

I'd start by having a talk with the folks at K & M Home Center in Loganville.

Re: Tabletop Replacement

Good idea, Tarnation.  I've been there quite a few times and they were always friendly and helpful.  Thanks.
