The Thing About Statistics

This Week Fox's Tucker Carlson interviewed Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute.

Nowrasteh stated : “And there are an awful lot of crimes committed by people here illegally and by noncitizens more broadly,” he continued. “The U.S. Sentencing Commission says 44 percent of all federal inmates are noncitizens. That’s a huge number. Why wouldn’t we be upset by that?”

Wow! 44% of inmates are non citizens? In there for rape and murder and such?
'Merica under siege!
Be afraid!!!

OK, Hold my beer.
Pay attention for a second. 44% of Federal inmates are non citizens.

It’s true that, from 2011 to 2016, about 44 percent of the federal prison population was made up of noncitizens.

But,

#1  Federal prisoners make up a small percentage of the total incarcerated population in the United States.

And,
#2 Most immigration offenses are federal crimes. So, that's where immigration offenders go.
More than two-thirds of those noncitizens incarcerated in federal facilities were there for immigration-related offenses.

Only about 15 percent of the total population were noncitizens incarcerated for nonimmigration offenses.

Re: The Thing About Statistics

I think that if we want to honestly deal with the problem of illegals committing crimes we need to first appreciate the nature of - and the scale of - the problem. This is how one starts the process of formulating solutions.

Of, course if all you want to do is use tragic crimes in order to score cheap political points, you go the Tucker Carlson route and offer misleading information and easy solutions.
