Magesterial District Judges are "minor" in name only, as their courtrooms are the portal through which all criminal defendants pass on their way to Common Pleas.
The District which covers Stewartstown and extreme southeastern York County saw a stunning upset in Stewartstown native (and Kennard Dale track star) Laura Manifold soundly defeating the multi-term incumbent Judge John Olwert.
Some comments on other races:
Fourth time appears the charm for Mike Flannelly. Unless there is a lot of ticket splitting in November to elect the extreme opposites Chris Menges (very conservative) and Kathleen Prendergast (very liberal) he is pretty much assured of a place on the bench. It probably helped that this time he was not strongly connected with Scott Wagner's trash money.
Why? That connection--right down to the glossy negative campaign pieces targeting Susie Byrnes--probably hurt Kelly Henshaw's bid to become a County Commissioner. He finished third in the Republican primary, though not as distantly as I (and most, likely, Stan Saylor) would have liked.
It was good to see two term incumbent Rick Keurleber defeat fired deputy incompetent Grove 2:1; although 3:1 or greater would have been much better. Grove was arrested for having taken inapproriate "action" against some yahoos spinning donuts in Spring Valley Park. The case went to trial and he was acquitted. Maybe he's not all that incompentent: He seems to be able to B.S. his way into creating reasonable doubt among jurors and a reasonable showing among voters.
And so it goes.
