Re: John Paul Stevens speaks Out About the 2nd Amendment

17 people were murdered by an assault weapon in a little over six minutes in Parkland High school.

Refresh my memory. How many Would-be American tyrants have been stopped in the entire history of the AR-15?

Could a "well regulated militia"--as in Switzerland--intervened to stop the carnage by minute two or three?

All recent mass shootings have taken place in "gun free zones".   The bad guys aren't stopped by signs.

Not sure what you are getting at.
Should maniacs be free to buy weapons of war in the hopes that someone might be around with a gun to stop them when they've only killed 8 or nine instead of 17?
Is that the ideal to strive for?

Re: John Paul Stevens speaks Out About the 2nd Amendment

Unfortunately the gun control debate many times finds instead instead of coming to some compromise to make people safer, rather it devolves into what is perceived as taking peoples guns vs inability to think anything can be done without impacting that same thing.

Justice Stevens logic was correct up to a point. However, the notion of repealing the 2nd Amendment will not happen in any of our lifetimes given the requirements to do so. However, amending decisions or and/or altering decisions pertaining to gun decisions can happen.

And the notion of "gun free zones" not being workable is also not valid as our own US Congress is a "gun free zone". A gun free zone does not necessarily mean that there are not further protections. If you look at the history of our own Congress, it was not always the case that it was a gun free zone (see article below for some eye opening incidents in the Halls of Congress back in 1954)

I hope the "kids" (I hate to call them that because they are acting more like adults than kids) are on the right track. We do need more sensible gun control which includes beefing up reporting of people who should not have guns coupled with mandatory background checks on all guns. Further,  things that make guns more and more weapons of mass murder need to be banned which include things like bump stocks, large capacity magazines and similar devices, etc.

There are groups and politicians standing in the way of this and they use money and fear to keep their agendas alive.

I am a gun owner but we have reached a tipping point many years ago and it is getting worse all the time. Let's hope the "kids" keep up the pressure to get things done !!

All recent mass shootings have taken place in "gun free zones".   The bad guys aren't stopped by signs.

Then why are gun shows 'gun free zones'?  We could list many more, including political rallies, CPAC meetings, courthouses, the White House, stadiums, concert halls, taverns, restaurants, etc.  The 'free zone' argument makes no sense, Tarnation.

Re: John Paul Stevens speaks Out About the 2nd Amendment

It is difficult for me to imagine that the second amendment could be repealed. Suggesting so may not be helpful.

It would be nice if Steven's remarks could serve as a springboard to a national discussion on guns.
But, they won't.
These remarks will find their greatest effect in a hysterical NRA fundraising letter.

Perhaps Stevens should have suggested the 2nd Amendment needs to be re-written to reflect life in the 21st century vs life in the 18th century.

Perhaps. Or simply to argue that the 2nd Amendment does not guarantee a right to all types of weaponry to all types of people.
