Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!

So, Trump is saying That, "If Americans won't express effusive gratitude to me personally, I don't see why I should bother doing what a president should do."

Trump's failure to distinguish between himself and the office he holds is almost the definition of not understanding a constitutional republic. 

There is also a racial dogwhistle at play here.

Oh well, the angry back and forth will thrill his witless base.  As if on cue, they are populating the internet with angry denounciations of this father, athletes in general, and black people.
