We will be going to the USVI through Puerto Rico for a month in December/January to help out friends post hurricane Maria. We will get some first hand experience on how things are going on those islands in the middle of a big ocean.
Just from our experience of living down there through several tropical storms and a half dozen hurricanes, I can tell you that building reconstruction and restoration of power to the entire island takes time. The one cat 5 direct hit we took from Marilyn, it was more than 4 months before we had electric power restored on St. Croix.
Puerto Rico’s power grid was in bad shape prior to Maria and it will take quite a while to get it back in service. That does not excuse the lame effort of our federal government and various government agencies for their lack of concerned response for the benefit of the citizens of the U.S. Caribbean island possessions. The response has been less than adequate and full of lame excuses.
