Some craft beer is officially PA Preferred under new initiative

It's now easier to know if that Pa. beer you're drinking is homegrown.

Customers at pubs, bars and restaurants will begin to see PA Preferred branded tap handles and coasters differentiating some beers brewed in the state.

On Friday, Gov. Tom Wolf announced PA Preferred Brews, a branding program dedicated to beers brewed in Pennsylvania using agricultural commodities grown in the state.

"It's overdue that we market and promote it," said Cheryl L. Cook, deputy secretary for Market Development for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.

The new program builds on the existing PA Preferred program and is designed for brewers and producers of grains and hops grown in the state.

An announcement for the new program was made Friday at the Millworks in Harrisburg. The restaurant/brewery released the first beer under the program, a PA Pale.

Millworks works with companies including Double Eagle Malt in Huntingdon Valley and Sunny Brae Hops in Carlisle.

So far, 20 breweries and six businesses are on the program's roster with more expected to join, said Ashley Dugan, PA Preferred coordinator.

The state ranks first in the nation for barrels of craft beer produced, according to the Brewers Association. More than 300 licensed breweries operate in the state and another 40 are awaiting licenses from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.

As part of the announcement Millworks brewmaster Jeff Musselman led a toast to the state's agriculture and brewers.

"It's really cool to take and taste Pennsylvania in a glass," he said.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.
