Trump revealed submarine locations to Philippines president

Trump revealed submarine locations to Philippines president

A call transcript between President Trump and Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte reveals that Trump boasted about two U.S. nuclear submarines near North Korea.

Trump, who spoke by phone with Duterte on April 29, addressed the possibility of a strike on North Korea using the submarines. A transcript of the conversation was published by the Intercept.

“We have a lot of firepower over there,” Trump said in the transcript, an official document of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.

“We have two submarines — the best in the world — we have two nuclear submarines — not that we want to use them at all,” Trump continues. “I’ve never seen anything like they are but we don’t have to use this but he could be crazy so we will see what happens.”

The Defense Department historically does not reveal the locations of its submarines, since keeping the vessels’ movements secret is key to their missions.

The Navy does acknowledge that nuclear submarines are part of deploying strike groups — allowing the public a general idea of the deployment schedule and destination. To this end, the service announced April 25 the USS Michigan Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine was in Busan, South Korea on a “routine visit,” and on May 2 said the USS Cheyenne Los Angeles-class attack submarine arrived at a Navy base in Sasebo, Japan.

Buzzfeed News reported that Pentagon officials are alarmed by Trump’s disclosure. Revealing that submarines are in the region is not the same as addressing how many there are and that they are near North Korea, as Trump did.

The comments are also odd due to the fact the Philippines is not a part of Pentagon efforts to deter North Korea.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Does Trump understand why that might be important to the Defense Department?  But, you see, it's not our navy ............ it's his navy, so he can do whatever he wants.  I'd really like to hear from someone who is currently, or was, in the navy.

Re: Trump revealed submarine locations to Philippines president

Shortly after I completed communications school training in the Navy I was assigned to NAVCOMSTA WASHDC. It was a communication station that can best be described as something out of a Clancy novel. Remote, secure, and secret. One of the mission services provided by this outpost was submarine fleet broadcast. We would receive messages for the Atlantic submarine fleet and at scheduled times we would send those messages out. Those messages would run the gamut from notices to mariners, weather forecasts, operations plans, "familygrams", and more. All communications were sent over cryptological secure networks, and, in those days, were sent out by CW (Morse code). We never knew the location of the subs. Even when onboard ships at sea occasionally you would get a message from a sub in the area who would want to dump messages to your ship for forwarding on to the addressees. You were required to take these messages and forward them. The only time we would actually know the location of a sub was when they came to the surface within line of sight of your ship.

The reason for protecting the location of submarines should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. Unfortunately, it seems as though president Trump has less than half a brain.

Sad. Very sad.

Well, to quote Donald Trump, "we will see what happens.”
