Re: Advertisers Bailing Out Over O'Reilly Flap

O'Reilly will survive. He's a multimillionaire. He has the highest rated cable 'news' show. He's written several best selling 'historical' novels.

Now all of that may trumpet his success, or it may be a head scratcher, depending upon your personal perspective.

O'Reilly and Trump are two peas in the same pod. They are both egotistical, narcissistic, misogynistic, sociopathic, self involved individuals. They both tend to make excuses, deflect responsibilities, and blame others for their mistakes and shortcomings. They don't give any thought to viciously attacking perceived enemies. It's no wonder they come to each other's defense.

It's enlightening to me when I hear O'Reilly put forward in his defense that statement about successful people like himself are often targets of lawsuits like this and he settles them, rather than adjudicating them, to protect his kids ! Give me a break. He settles them because he wants to hide the truth and protect his actual sleazy persona from the public in open court. Do you still remember the infamous loofa shower telephone call he made to one of his female staff members several years ago? I do.

O'Reilly is lucky he works for a company that apparently accepts and even encourages misogynistic acts . . . And makes a lot of money for that company. That pretty much says it all about what Fox 'news' feels is most important in their operation.

Re: Advertisers Bailing Out Over O'Reilly Flap

O'Reilly will survive. He tells his audience what they want to hear. Always a good formula for success.
This audience does not want their opinions questioned.
Cable stations are a place where being entertaining is more important than being thoughtful.
Having what you already believe reinforced is much  more appealing than is learning.

And ratings are thought to be synonymous with excellence.

Re: Advertisers Bailing Out Over O'Reilly Flap

NEW YORK (AP) — The founder of Fox News Channel was forced out in a sexual harassment scandal last summer. The network's No. 1 star, Bill O'Reilly, has been accused of crude and vindictive behavior toward women. Lawsuits depict a toxic environment at the company's New York headquarters. And yet, by the most important yardstick for television executives, Fox is thriving as never before.

The network just finished the first three months of the year with the biggest quarterly audience a cable news network has ever had. It's watched more than any other cable network, including the entertainment ones, and O'Reilly leads the way.His program, "The O'Reilly Factor," generated $178 million in advertising revenue for Fox News in 2015, Kantar Media reported. No other cable news show does as well."They've got somebody who has a license to print money and they're going to do everything they can to keep him on the air," said Richard Levick, a Washington-based crisis communications expert. The Wall Street Journal, Fox's corporate sister, reported this weekend that O'Reilly's contract had been renewed.

Yet O'Reilly is facing real heat this time. He has hired his own crisis communications expert. National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill on Tuesday called for O'Reilly to be fired and an independent investigation launched into sexual harassment at Fox. At least five advertisers, skittish about the harassment reports, have said they don't want their products sold on his show, at least for the time being.

Don't look back, Bill, someone might be gaining on you.

Rachel Maddow Bests Bill O’Reilly To Top Week’s Cable News Demo Ratings

The Rachel Maddow Show was No. 1 among cable news programs in the  25-54 year old age bracket for the week of March 27.

Maddow’s show beat Fox News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor in the news demo for a third consecutive week.

For the week, Maddow’s program averaged 2.70 million total viewers and 624,000 viewers in the news demo.  She beat O’Reilly’s by 40,000 25-54 year-old viewers. Maddow’s show aired five nights last week, while O’Reilly’s aired only Monday through Thursday;  Friday telecast was broken out as a special.

In her 9 PM timeslot, FNC’s Tucker Carlson Live clocked 2.69M viewers and 537K news demo viewers, while CNN’s AC360 logged 1.22M viewers and 433K news demo viewers.

Donald Trump’s White House has been been very good for Maddow; on March 15, she clocked her biggest audience ever – 4.13M viewers and 1.4M demo viewers,  when she got her hands on Trump’s headline-challenged 2005 tax return.

I think he will likely survive also, but the stain will not come off and advertisers will continue to avoid him.

Fox appears to have again created a lot of their own problems.
