Lost in Translation

First VP Mike Pence greeted the Irish PM with "Top of the morning", which apparently is only uttered by American tourists and actors.

Then Donald Trump offered an Irish proverb, which was a proverb and wasn't Irish.

Paul Ryan is getting dragged by Ireland for his dismal pint of Guinness

If you're a politician making a light-hearted St Patrick's Day reference, it's important to get it right. Very important.

If you don't — as Paul Ryan very much didn't when he held up a woeful pint of Guinness at the recent Washington D.C. Friends of Ireland luncheon on Thursday — there's every chance that Ireland will take note.

On Thursday, Irish journalist Naomi O'Leary shared the following image.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.
