OK, How Does This Work

Trump wants 20% tax on imports from Mexico to pay for wall

(CNN)President Donald Trump has decided he will seek to pay for the wall on the US's southern border by imposing a 20% tax on imports from Mexico and as part of a larger comprehensive tax reform plan, the White House said Thursday.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the comprehensive tax reform package Trump and Republicans are looking to put together will include taxing imports from other countries, like Mexico.

"By doing it that we can do $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall just through that mechanism alone. That's really going to provide the funding," Spicer said, referring to a 20% tax. According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, Mexico's exports to the US in 2015 was valued at $316.4 billion. The trade deficit is estimated to be $50 billion.

Soooo,,,,,, a 20 % import tax on Mexican goods brought into the United States.
Won't that make Mexican goods 20% more expensive for US consumers, which means,,,,,, You and I are paying for the wall?

Tennyson is right!  We need some 'alternative facts' to clear this up.

Re: OK, How Does This Work

I really hope this doesn't go through.

There are so many benefits as a continent that everyone gets along from a commerce, military, and diplomatic perspective.

If the wall is worth building, it's worth us paying for it. Don't f*ck up our trading partnership with Mexico (and Canada) to fulfill a ridiculous campaign promise.

I think you're going to see a lot of different United States of America over the next three, four, or eight years. - President Donald J. Trump

Trump is SO thin-skinned that he doesn't look at other consequences of many of his statements and promises. Some how he is going to likely spend $Billions on a wall that will do little and depending on how he pays for it and who he "pisses-off" will actually damage us.

Re: OK, How Does This Work

Trump is kind of stuck.
That stupid wall is the ultimate shiny object for his fans.
So, illegal immigration is at a decades old low, Mexico is a friend,,,,,, but 'the disruption candidate ' will pick a fight for his own political interests.

Re: OK, How Does This Work

I'm not sure how this works, either.  Suppose a 20% tariff goes through.  Ok, fine, but we'll end up paying for the wall anyway.  For example, the Ford Focus is built in Mexico and Donald Trump brand suits as well.

So the Focus sells for $22,000 now and Trump brand suits sell for $300.  A 20% tariff means the Focus will be listed at $26,400 and Trump suits will be priced at $360 here in America.  So who is paying for the wall?  Am I missing something here?

Re: OK, How Does This Work

We are paying for the wall.
Instead of some political boondoggle, why don't we protect children in Flint from lead poisoning?
It will cost about 1% what the Wall would, and it would actually help people.
