Common sense, they are volunteers,, good for traffic control at the county fair.
They should not be involved in sting operations with dangerous criminals.
He might have just as easily killed another officer.

Agreed. Just watched the ABC report on this. The reserve deputy ran the Sherriff's election committee and donated thousands of dollars to the sherriff's campaign.

It's almost as if he paid to be a police officer.

Perhaps after the Tulsa department gets sued out of the ying-yang having reserve officers participate in these type of operations will no longer be an issue.

While I DO agree that any and all should be encouraged to participate in their government including even reserve officer types, all dangerous situations sould be left to the fully trained and non-reserve indivuduals.

Re: "I shot him. I'm sorry"

Sorry I can't post the link since I'm on the mobile site bit it's being reported by the Tulsa news paper that the supervisors in charge of the reservist were ordered to falsify his training records and I fact, he was not trained to state stamdards. A quick Google search should find it for you. The story is really disturbing.

Unbelievable,,,

From Tulsa World:

"Staff at the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office were reportedly ordered to falsify the training records and firearms certificates of a reserve deputy who mistook his firearm for a Taser, leading to the shooting death of an unarmed black man earlier this month.

Robert Bates, 73, a wealthy insurance executive who worked as a volunteer reserve deputy with the Tulsa County Police, was awarded “credit for field training he never took and firearms certifications he should not have received,” sources told the Tulsa World.

It was also revealed that “at least three” of Bates’ supervisors were transferred from the department after refusing to sign off on his state-required training, sources speaking on condition of anonymity told the Tulsa World.

Tulsa Country Sheriff Stanley Glanz told a Tulsa radio station that Bates had been licensed to use three firearms, including a handgun he mistook for a stun gun when he fatally shot Harris while detaining him. However, the Sheriff’s Office said it has not been able to find Bates’ certification paperwork."

Re: "I shot him. I'm sorry"

The OK Attorney General should launch an investigation, and if these allegations are substantiated the Tulsa County Sheriff and the supervisors who ordered the records tampering should be charged with forgery (unsworn falsifications) and criminal conspiracy.

The Sheriff would do well to resign now rather than face removal from office.

I agree.
This is so frustrating. You have to wonder how much woe on earth is caused by people not being sensible, by feeling entitled to take shortcuts, or failing to adhere to the very same training policies that they themselves have set up.

This will be an important investigation.
