Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Government Surveillance (HBO)

The interview with Snowden starts at about 14:08 if you want to watch this.

There are very few government checks on what America’s sweeping surveillance programs are capable of doing. John Oliver sits down with Edward Snowden to discuss the NSA, the balance between privacy and security.

It was a surprisingly good interview that Oliver did with Snowden.

The highlight, in my opinion was when Oliver asked Snowden how many of the documents he stole and released that he actually read.
And, he told Snowden that if any of those documents led to harm that "you have to own that".

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Not only was it a good interview, I thought is was remarkably balanced with little editorializing about Snowden's role as a "good guy" or a "bad guy"

Olivar also made some strong points about Americans not really having an opinion about the government's need to do a lot of what they do in the surveillance space, until he brought up the part about sending naked pictures across the internet. The people who they interviewed then had very strong opinions about it.

Oliver brought a level of understanding, through humor, to the subject that your typical Washington Post edititorial or Meet the Press interview can't. I really think it's worth watching if you want a better idea of what the debate is all about.

And the part where MSNBC breaks away from the debate about NSA spying to the "Breaking News" about Justin Beiber being arrested in <bleeping> priceless.

I think you're going to see a lot of different United States of America over the next three, four, or eight years. - President Donald J. Trump
