Corker says Trump won't tear up Iran nuclear deal

Another campaign promise bites the dust.
In the final analysis, the only Trump promises to survive may be those that benefit Big Business.
Look for regulations protecting you in the world of finance, and environmental regulations coming under attack.

Corker says Trump won't tear up Iran nuclear deal

(CNN)Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker cast doubt Wednesday that President-elect Donald Trump will reverse the Iran nuclear deal, saying such a decision would distract his fledgling administration in its first days.

Corker instead suggested that the President-elect take a milder approach, working across the congressional aisle to review the agreement in its current form.

"I don't think he will tear it up and I don't think that's the way to start. I think what he should do is build consensus with these other countries that (Iran is) definitely violating the agreement," Corker told CNN's Jake Tapper on "The Lead." "He's going to have Congress with him on that. I think that's a much better approach."

Re: Corker says Trump won't tear up Iran nuclear deal

If I recall from the GOP primary, every candidate was going to "tear up the Iran deal on day one"

The only difference between the candidates was how soon after inauguration that the actual tearing would happen.

I think Ted Cruz promised he would set it on fire and snort the ashes off the front of a bible during his inauguration speech.

So the "promise" was going to be broken no matter what because it wasn't an agreement between the US and Iran, but between us, China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, and Germany.

It would be embarrassing for the U.S. to shirk it's agreement with our allies and a sign of weakness to China and Russia.

Edit to add: If Trump and those in the GOP want to challenge Iran outside of the nuclear deal (and I hope they don't), they will do so by selling more arms to Israel, encouraging Saudi Arabia to build out a nuclear arsenal, and resinserting American troops into Iraq and possibly Syria.

I could see Trump putting more arms into the middle east and pushing the Saudis to build nukes. I don't see any massive amount of boots on the ground in Iraq or Syria.

But who knows with this guy.

Re: Corker says Trump won't tear up Iran nuclear deal

The Iran deal is more than just a US / Iran deal. It was an International deal. Even IF we pull out of it and the others abide by it, basically Iran sanctions have been lifted and will remain so unless the others also rescind the deal which is unlikely IMHO.

Read the info on Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Any action by the US will likely be just for show, which is what a lot of politics is about anyway.

Re: Corker says Trump won't tear up Iran nuclear deal

It is sad that so many people voted for Trump based upon him promising things that he had no intention of doing, or in this case, lacked the power to do.

The populace has become dangerously ignorant of how our government works, or of how international agreements are structured.

Goose is right on this.  You run a campaign based on fear, anger, and hate ................ gonna deport millions of illegal immigrants, blow up the Iran deal, repeal the Affordable Care Act, build a wall on our southern border, drain the swamp etc, with no real plan on how to follow through ..........

you realize you are going to have to govern an entire country, suddenly those promises that got your voters all worked up to vote for you don't seem so rational.

Exactly! This country needs a major civics lesson. I think if we did so, we'd see less of the post-Trump election freakout.

Obama said something during his press conference the other day. He said when he took over the presidency, he thought his government would be a speed boat but in reality it was a big hulking cruise ship. Slow to move and hard to turn. And that was when he had big majorities in the House and Senate.

Trump has no such majority in the Senate. The government will continue to meander on slowly. And perhaps, that's the way it was designed.

Well, 4 years from now the likelihood is that people will be disgruntled AGAIN !

One good thing is that the older generation is dying off (unfortunately that includes ME too ! )
