Cracks Appear in Democratic-Jewish Alliance Over Iran Deal, Netanyahu

Cracks Appear in Democratic-Jewish Alliance Over Iran Deal, Netanyahu

Nuclear pact and White House spat with Israeli prime minister unnerve many Jewish leaders

Many U.S. Jewish leaders are unnerved both by the new Iran nuclear agreement and the public falling out between President Barack Obama and his Israeli counterpart, developments that are creating a rift in the durable alliance between Jews and the Democratic Party in the run-up to the 2016 elections.Worried that Iran might still develop a nuclear weapon despite the accord announced Thursday, the Jewish leaders say they feel torn between an Obama administration that has pressed hard for a deal and an Israeli government that has repeatedly warned that Iran is a grave threat to the Jewish state and can’t be trusted to abandon its nuclear ambitions.A group of Jewish Democratic House members met with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough in his office last week and cautioned that for them to help “sell a very unpopular [Iran nuclear] deal to our constituents,” Mr. Obama must “increase his popularity with our constituents,” said a Democratic congressman involved in the meeting.

It's unfortunate that our relations with Israel have been reduced to partisanship.

Still it is difficult to imagine a huge flight of American Jewish voters to the GOP.

What do they want instead?  A declaration of war?

One has to wonder.
Netanyahu says that he isn't opposed to an agreement, he just doesn't want this agreement. However he's been saying that he disapproves of the deal for the entire period of the negotiations. In other words, he was against the deal before there was a deal.  Netanyahu has also asserted that Iran cannot be trusted. So, what value would a different agreement have in his mind?
So, one would have to conclude that Netanyahu is against negotiating at all.

Sanctions are already in place. Experts believe that sanctions are unlikely to prevent Iran from building a handful of nukes.

So, what's left?
War.

I would believe that the damage to the R-tribe over how it has reacted to any Iran deal is going to have more severe political impact to them than the possible desertion of any Jewish vote to the D-tribe.

I guess Netanyahu would be perfectly happy for the USA to go to war for him.  Or, hey, why not just appoint Netanyahu to Secretary of Defense?
