Re: DNC Thread

I waited up to make sure I would hear the Bernie Sanders speech at the DNC to see just how his speech struck a note to support Hillary. I thought he did a commanding job in describing why he can throw his full weight behind Hillary. I expected that he would do none less as I believe that he is convinced a Trump Presidency would be exactly what the US does not need.

It was interesting to see the support ALL gave to Bernie. He probably got the most applause of the night which was likely expected.

In terms of actual speeches in prime time here is what I thought.

Corey Booker - the most impassioned speech of the night. It did not start with hightened emotion, but wound up being the most impassioned speech (and excellent) of the night.

Michelle Obama - gave a "wooser" speech. She hit on all the reasons to vote for Hillary and reject Trump. I have always been impressed with her speech giving ability. In many respects she is as good a speech giver as Obama. You could see her becoming emotional at different times during her speech.

Liz Warren - OK, but not nearly as powerful as the first two.

Bernie - did what he needed to hopefully bring his faithful on board in supporting Hillary. Obviously some will not, but his message was a powerful one in support of Hillary. Time will tell how effective it was.

Agree with you.  I was a little disappointed with Warren's speech but she still managed to hit some important highlights that she's fighting over in Congress.

Re: DNC Thread

One side note to Bernie's speech. One of his big things on the platform (and Hillary as well) is to raise the minimum wage. The DNC platform has a goal of $15. We will see if they can get to that level, but for sure many are struggling with the current minimum wages. One thing that Bernie made reference to is the number of people in the US today in poverty. While no one wants to see many if poverty if we could do something about it, the actual poverty rate has hovered around the 15% area for many, many years. Here was an eye opening chart for me.

The one thing that I thing the Democrats would like to do is get more middle class people working in good jobs by funding repairing our ailing infrastructure. The plus side of this is that is should be a double win - more and better jobs as well as improving our infrastructure which is badly needed and will itself pay dividends in the long run.

Re: DNC Thread

After reading through the petty bickering, personal slurs, and emotional retorts by some in this topic, one can relate it to the nasty political campaign we've seen thus far, that will probably get worse going forward. It's a shame that we can't just discuss topics without sinking to purely emotional personal attacks.

Maybe some people need to just grow up.

Re: DNC Thread

Overall, things went well for the Dema last night. Michelle Obama's speech got rave reviews (and from some reports had members of the press crying, which doesn't make them seem biased at all).

No real big issues came up, so it appears to be a decent night for the Dems. Only time will tell if/how much this changes the election.

If it makes you feel any better, some of the Fox reporters were crying too, but for different reasons.
Hey, to be serious,  reporters are people, just like you and me. And they have biases, just like you and me.
The best that one can hope for in the real world is that they try to do their jobs the best that they can.
It would be a ridiculous fiction to pretend that reporters for any agency are without their biases, although some will attempt to do so here.

BTW, what is wrong with being moved by the best, most positive speech of either convention so far? ( actually you could say that Michelle has given the TWO best speeches of either convention so far.  )
It was a remarkable breath of fresh air in this perfectly horrid season.
Are people supposed to pretend that the speech wasn't good?
Have tribal politics descended to the level of the first lady now?
I really like Michelle Obama. I like Laura Bush too.

Please take care to spell my name correctly in the abuse report.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

I agree that it was a positive night for the Dems. We will have  to wait and see IF the remaining tone of the DNC actually winds up bringing the majority of the Bernie supporters into getting behind  Hillary. As I said earlier I thought Bernie did a good job imparting a message of unity and how the party's platform is now embracing many of his key goals.

Not sure crying makes one biased, just as an observation of your comment above. I tuned in prime time (CSPAN)  to make sure I caught Bernie's speech as I said earlier so I caught most of the prominent speakers. BOTH Michelle and Booker had very emotional speeches. I expect both got to many at some point.

As a side note, I find it amazingly different how they cable news networks report and cover the elections the day after. For the coverage I thought CSPAN did a good job of doing unfiltered coverage. I also like how they take both R and D (and non R/D) callers that call in to comment after the event.

I agree with you that Bernie did his job in trying to bring his supporters in for Hillary.  I'm sure it will help some, but how much will be the big question.

Crying doesn't necessarily make them biased, but it does play into the perceptions that the hearts and minds of many in the mainstream media are with the Democratic party.

I have been changing the channel every time they break into "analysis" by their group of 10 commentators.  Just let me hear the speeches and make up my mind on my own.

Watch CSPAN if you can get it - - it will solve your dilemma !

Re: DNC Thread

Ended up watching most of the DNC last night. Pooped out at the end of the Bernie speech. Some general thoughts....

The music (minus the sad and dreadful Paul Simon performance) is blowing away the music from the RNC. The DNC house band was on fire last night.

Sarah Freakin' Silverman. Loved her shot at getting the Bernie supporters getting in line. And she brings credibility because she campaigned for Bernie throughout the primary season.

The DNC last night was raucous, fun, and diverse. A true snapshot of America compared to what we saw at the RNC.

I'm fairly liberal on immigration, but I am not sure what parading illegal immigrants across the stage does to help the Dems. In fact, I think it is damaging with independents and swing voters who may not like Trump, but believe in the rule of law.

A small point, but one that I thought was thoughtful on the part of Dems. Early on, probably around the 6:00 hour, Bob Brady (Congressman representing South Philly) gave a speech and pointed out that in the Pennsylvania delegation, there was an empty chair that represented all the POW/MIAs from our military. It was similar to a table that is set up in any VFW hall. I don't know if the RNC did something similar, but it was a cool moment and I'm glad that it was done within the PA delegates.

I look forward to supporting Corey Booker in 2024.

Michelle Obama's speech was a work of art. If you didn't get at least a little emotional when she talked about waking up in a house every morning that was built by slaves, I don't want to know you. If she wanted to, she could win a Senate seat in 2018 without lifting a finger.

Liz Warren -- I always thought she would have done better representing the left wing of the party than Bernie, but I was wrong. Boring speech.

And Bernie did a good job. He got his basic point of view across while still making clear he's on board with Hillary.

I think you're going to see a lot of different United States of America over the next three, four, or eight years. - President Donald J. Trump
