Cruz is In

Ted Cruz to Announce on Monday He Plans to Run for President, Report Says

Senator Ted Cruz will declare on Monday that he will run for president in 2016, making him the first major hopeful to formally enter the race, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Mr. Cruz, Republican of Texas, will make his announcement at Liberty University in Virginia, where he is expected to be a speaker at a convocation ceremony, the report said.

He will skip the habitual step of creating an exploratory committee as a precursor to a campaign, the newspaper reported, citing senior advisers to Mr. Cruz. The move seems designed to send a signal that he has completed the exploratory phase and is ready to run.

An aide to Mr. Cruz did not immediately respond to an email early Sunday seeking comment.

Mr. Cruz will be effectively firing the starting gun on the Republican primary, which has been dominated so far by the early exploratory maneuvers of Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor; Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin; Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey; Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky; and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

Mr. Rubio and Mr. Paul are said to be planning to enter the race next month, meaning that Mr. Cruz is looking to leap ahead and define himself as much as possible.

He is setting a goal of raising between $40 million and $50 million, The Chronicle reported, adding that he also hopes to peel off enough social conservatives and libertarians to defeat the eventual establishment choice.

Mr. Cruz has been working aggressively to court major donors nationally, and often touts the tea party appeal that vaulted him to office after he was an underdog in Texas in 2012.

He has impressed some by ticking off confidently why he thinks he is better than other choices. But many Republican elites remain skeptical of and angry with Mr. Cruz over the 2013 government shutdown.

Re: Cruz is In

I can't imagine a situation where I could ever vote for Ted Cruz. I see a lot of comparisons betweenn Cruz and 2006 Barack Obama. Freshman senator. Hasn't done anything other than make a bunch of speeches. No significant legislation passed.

That said, I like that he's getting the race moving. This will push the rest of the field into announcing thier intentions.

It will move up Rand Paul's time table, I should think.

The fact that he is choosing that sight for his announcement speaks for itself.

Re: Cruz is In

Mr. Cruz has proven himself to be a divisive entity in our federal legislative branch. He does not seek to collaborate, cooperate, or compromise with any individual or group that does not conform to his personal out-of-touch point of view or the selfish wants of his financial backers who see him as a mere pawn to do their bidding.

From my perspective, his election to higher office would be catastrophic for U.S. domestic policy and disastrous for our standing in the international community.

Excellent assessment.  I agree 100% and I definitely don't see myself voting for Mr. Cruz either.  I really hope he would NOT be the Republican nominee for President.

I agree, unfortunately we can basically say the same thing of just about everyone who is going to run for President in 2016.

It certainly looks like the Republican run up to the National elections will be a real three ring circus. It should be at minimum good entertainment.

Truly anybody who runs is going to have an outsized ego.
Cruz is a man in a hurry and that means having very sharp elbows.
I don't think that his divisiness sells well in a general election.

Yes it does.

Mr. Cruz should present some entertaining moments considering his unique ability to cram both feet in his mouth at the same time and still manage to speak out of both sides. The guy seems to be oblivious to his own obvious contradictions and inability to construct reasonable statements to support his positions.
