General Mills Recalls 10 Million Pounds of Gold Medal Flour After 42 are Sickened with 'Potentially Deadly' E. Coli
It might be time to toss your flour.
General Mills announced on Tuesday that it would be recalling 10 million pounds of their brand's flour under suspicion that it might contain a dangerous strain of E. coli bacteria. On Friday, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and General Mills announced that the recall was expanding after four more people got sick from the flour. This brings the total number of illnesses caused to 42 in at least 21 states.
"Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick," the General Mills website says. "E. coli O121 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. Seniors, the very young, and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness."
