(1889): The Johnstown Flood devastates the town of Johnstown, Pa. More than 20 million gallons of water rushed from the South Fork Damn, killing 2,200 people and causing $17 million worth of damage (about $450 million in today's dollars).
Read all about it, and how it could have been avoided, in David McCullough's debut "The Johnstown Flood,"
