"Hair Trigger" Trey and his never ending Benghazi "investigation"

Will we ever see the end of this committee and their aimless search for the "truth" as they see it? Not as long as Hillary is a candidate or, worst case scenario, she is elected president.

My question about Trey Gowdy is: if he was (supposedly) such a great prosecuting attorney, why can't he bring this case to his desired outcome? The biggest reason he can't is that the facts just don't support his and his conspirators storyline.

Democrats: Benghazi chairman ignores statement by GOP lawyer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The House Benghazi committee's Republican chairman is ignoring statements by his own former lawyer indicating that the U.S. military acted properly on the night of the deadly Sept. 11, 2012, attacks in Libya, the panel's Democrats said.

Reps. Elijah Cummings and Adam Smith said Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., omitted the lawyer's comments when he fired back at the Defense Department for criticizing the GOP-led investigation into the attacks that killed four Americans.

Gowdy's actions, coupled with delays that have pushed the 2-year-old inquiry into the heat of the 2016 presidential race, "have damaged the credibility of the Select Committee beyond repair," Cummings and Smith wrote Sunday in a letter to Gowdy.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.

Cummings, of Maryland, is the senior Democrat on the Benghazi panel; Smith, of Washington state, is the senior Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee. He also serves on the select Benghazi panel.

The criticism by the two Democrats is the latest volley in an escalating, election-year fight over the Benghazi panel's actions — or inaction. The panel, created in May 2014, has not conducted a public hearing since October, when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified.

Democrats call the panel a thinly veiled excuse for Republicans to criticize Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination. Republicans say the Obama administration has dragged its feet, failing to produce needed documents or interview subjects, delaying a final report.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens was among those died during the twin assaults nearly four years ago. Previous investigations blamed management failures at the State Department for a lack of security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, an issue that has dogged Clinton and other Obama administration officials.

Matt Wolking, a spokesman for the Benghazi committee, called the Democrats' letter "dishonest" and a waste of time, adding: "Democrats' false attacks on legitimate congressional oversight are proof they're nervous about the new information committee investigators have uncovered."

"Republicans will continue conducting a thorough, fact-centered investigation that includes all relevant witnesses, regardless of rank," Wolking added.

Cummings and Smith cite comments by retired Army Lt. Gen. Dana Chipman, who served as chief counsel for Republicans on the Benghazi panel from August 2014 until last January.

Chipman "repeatedly commended the military's actions on the night of the attacks during closed interviews with Defense Department officials," Cummings and Smith wrote.

Chipman, a former judge advocate general for the Army, attended a closed-door interview with former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Jan. 8.

Cummings and Smith quote Chipman as telling Panetta: "I think you ordered exactly the right forces to move out and to head toward a position where they could reinforce what was occurring in Benghazi or Tripoli or elsewhere in the region. And, sir, I don't disagree with the actions you took, the recommendations you made and the decisions you directed."

Chipman later told Panetta he was "worried" that U.S. officials were caught by surprise during the Benghazi raids, which occurred on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Still, Chipman told Panetta: "Nothing could have affected what occurred in Benghazi," Cummings and Smith wrote.

Republicans on the Benghazi committee on Monday emailed a statement from Chipman saying he agrees with Gowdy that if some witnesses refer the committee to other witnesses, "the responsible thing to do is interview them. The committee has an obligation to the American people to determine what can and cannot be substantiated, so if an individual makes public allegations about Benghazi, the committee should interview that person."

The letter from the Democrats comes after Gowdy sent a letter to Defense Secretary Ash Carter complaining that a top Pentagon official had intentionally mischaracterized the House inquiry.

Gowdy said comments by Stephen C. Hedger, assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs, were "riddled with factual inaccuracies" and did "a disservice to the public" and employees at the Defense Department.

Hedger, in an April 28 letter to Gowdy, expressed frustration with the Benghazi panel, citing a "crescendo" of costly, duplicative and unnecessary requests, including a few based on claims made on Facebook or talk radio.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Time to stick a fork in this whole investigation.

On and on it goes.

Capitol Hill Buzz: Gowdy remarks stir partisan Benghazi feud

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's a question congressional investigators have long been seeking to answer: Could the military have reached the besieged diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, in time to prevent the killings of four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, the night of Sept. 11, 2012?

The chairman of the House Benghazi committee — echoing comments by his top lawyer — now says no.

"Whether or not they could have gotten there in time, I don't think there is any issue with respect to that. They couldn't," Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., told Fox News this week.

Democrats seized on the comment, saying Gowdy was dismissing a central element of the two-year investigation into the attacks. The sole purpose of the probe, they argue, is to undercut the presidential bid of Hillary Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time.

Some Republicans have said military forces were either delayed or slow to respond to the violence as it was unfolding. Critics of the Obama administration have repeatedly suggested that U.S. forces could have been rushed to the scene of the attacks, but never received the call.

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the senior Democrat on the Benghazi panel, said Gowdy's statement proves that "a central Republican allegation" about the attacks is wrong, while Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Gowdy "has been forced to admit that one of the most pernicious ... theories" in the Benghazi investigation "has no basis in fact."

Reinforcing the Democratic message, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., sent the statements by Democratic committee members to reporters.

But committee Republicans said Gowdy's comment was not the end of the story.

In his interview with Fox on Tuesday, Gowdy went on to question why the military could not have saved American lives during the 13-hour, twin assaults, which began at a diplomatic outpost and extended to a nearby CIA annex.

"The next question is, why could you not" get there in time? Gowdy asked during the Fox interview. "Why were you not positioned to do it?"

Democrats "did ... a real disservice when they selectively leaked part of" the questions asked by the committee's former top lawyer, retired Army Lt. Gen. Dana Chipman, Gowdy said.

Chipman told former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at a closed-door hearing Jan. 8 that the military acted properly that night, adding: "Nothing could have affected what occurred in Benghazi."

Even so, Gowdy and other Republicans have been seeking to interview service members who have made public allegations that military planes could have been sent to Benghazi but were not deployed.

A senior Pentagon official has expressed frustration with the Benghazi panel, citing a "crescendo" of costly, duplicative and unnecessary requests, including a few based on claims made on Facebook or talk radio.

Citing Gowdy's comment that planes could not have responded in time, Cummings called on the Benghazi panel "to stop harassing the Pentagon with baseless demands, release the transcripts of our witness interviews and stop wasting millions of taxpayer dollars dragging out the investigation closer and closer to the election."

Gowdy has promised a report before summer, but said in the meantime the investigation continues.

"Democrats may be content to stick to their preordained conclusions, but the committee has an obligation to determine what can and cannot be substantiated when it comes to the new witnesses we have interviewed and the new evidence we have gathered," he said.
