There are a lot of theories about the Myan civilization and what caused its collapse. Here is the most recent research into the time of its collapse. It might be noted that much of the recorded information regarding the Myan civilization that might have helped historians figure out more about it is minimal. Almost none of the Maya’s written records, which once numbered in the thousands, survived past colonial times (on the order of Catholic priests, the Spanish burned Maya books wholesale - only four are now known to exist).
If you have the time and have an interest the following is an interesting read.

I've read several accounts concerning the demise of the Mayan civilization and all mention drought, warfare, civil unrest, and loss of faith in leadership as contributors to the societal collapse. These alleged contributors seem to span the demise of several ancient societal entities that became powerful influences, flourished, expanded, and then declined.
Some day historians and societal detectives will be writing similar treatises about a country once called the United States of America.
