The parent company of Aldi US, the grocery chain whose stores to seem to sprout up everywhere, also owns Trader Joe's! I've been in both stores and I'll take a TJ's any day over an Aldi where one is required to pay a quarter for a cart and must furnish your own bags. I think the $.25 is refunded when done with the cart--sort of bizarre.

The cart scheme is intended to keep the carts by the store vs everywhere in the parking lot.
It also enables them to not have a person who monitors the carts like a lot of other stores.
Aldis is set up to be a low cost, low overhead, decent quality alternative to the lager grocery stores. In that regards it does an excellent job. In states that allow liquor sales in all grocery stores Aldis also sells low cost wines to their customers as well.

I've been in the Aldi store in east York--thanks, but no thanks.
