GOP Death Ride?

Inside the Republican Party’s Desperate Mission to Stop Donald Trump

The scenario Karl Rove outlined was bleak.

Addressing a luncheon of Republican governors and donors in Washington on Feb. 19, he warned that Donald J. Trump’s increasingly likely nomination would be catastrophic, dooming the party in November. But Mr. Rove, the master strategist of George W. Bush’s campaigns, insisted it was not too late for them to stop Mr. Trump, according to three people present.

At a meeting of Republican governors the next morning, Paul R. LePage of Maine called for action. Seated at a long boardroom table at the Willard Hotel, he erupted in frustration over the state of the 2016 race, saying Mr. Trump’s nomination would deeply wound the Republican Party. Mr. LePage urged the governors to draft an open letter “to the people,” disavowing Mr. Trump and his divisive brand of politics.

The suggestion was not taken up. Since then, Mr. Trump has only gotten stronger, winning two more state contests and collecting the endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey.

In public, there were calls for the party to unite behind a single candidate. In dozens of interviews, elected officials, political strategists and donors described a frantic, last-ditch campaign to block Mr. Trump — and the agonizing reasons that many of them have become convinced it will fail. Behind the scenes, a desperate mission to save the party sputtered and stalled at every turn.

LePage endorsed Trump Friday! A strange story

LePage endorses Trump for president
Governor previously supported Christie

LePage made the endorsement Friday afternoon on the "The Howie Carr Show.""He's a businessman. I'm a businessman," LePage said. "I think he could be one of the greatest presidents if he sits down and puts together a good team."

LePage previously supported New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who dropped out of the race Feb. 10. Christie also endorsed Trump on Friday.

Looks like the end of the GOP as we have known it.

Of course, with LePage and Christie coming along, it may be a case of, in the words of the Who,

"Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss"

I hope so. They have lied to the voters for many years. Now it's time to pay the piper.

Well, I cannot argue with that.
However, if you look at the few policy specifics the Trump has offered, it is only fair to wonder,,,,,
Is he any more likely to be able to deliver on his promises than the people he's pushing aside?

And, is his coalition of voters really prepared to make deals with people on the other side of the isle to get things done?
I mean, a year ago these same folks would scream "RINO" at anybody who tried.

This is a very serious point and I hope that you will give it consideration.
It is my understanding that the GOP "establishment" is in trouble for making promises that they did not keep. Could not, in fact, keep. They ran for election promising to repeal Obama care when they didn't have the votes to do it and knew that they wouldn't have the votes to do it.
They said that they'd balance the budget, when they had no intention of doing so, and if they did, the people screaming for a balanced budget would become the people screaming to maintain their favorite entitlement.
So, the base feels used and betrayed.

Now, along comes Trump, promising to defeat ISIS without ground troops, Repealing Obama care, building a wall along the border and forcing Mexico to pay for it, deporting 11 million people, balancing the budget, curing problems with China and Putin thru the simple force of his will, banning entrance to the country thru a religion test, Making sure (I'm not making this up) clerks say "Merry Christmas" to you instead of "Happy Holidays", etc.

If he becomes president, NONE of those things is likely to happen.
So, what will the Trump supporters do then?

Re: GOP Death Ride?

I think the same problem will occur on the other side. The big one that I think most of the young folks support is the "free" college. What happens when there is no free college? You can go down the list of promises made that are not likely to happen.

Now for Trump comments. The Merry Christmas issue. I think anyone with 2 working brain cells knows that the president can not force that. But the President can say it is fine to use that greeting. And I encourage everyone to use it.
I would disagree that he wants a "religious" test. There is a very specific threat directed at our country and if there is a danger of people entering the country then a temporary halt seems reasonable. FBI director Comey just recently stated that there are about 900 investigations related to ISIS recruits, operatives.
The FBI is stretched to their limits to handle new cases. We know the current vetting does not work.
So a halt or slow down makes sense. As for the refugees from the middle east. Create a safe zone where people can live with out threat from the ongoing civil war. Look at what is happening in Europe. That would be good for all involved.

Do you really think that the Federal budget can not be balanced? 19 trillion in debt! Once the interest rate starts up we are sunk. Even if there is a start to reduce the debt that's more then what happen the last 7 years.

The rest of the stuff? He would have to be elected and then see what would happen. If it's the same old games played? I have no idea what will happen. The country is restless both republicans and democrats.
