Check out the eagle cam. Mom is doing her duty and is covered with snow. Looks so cold!

What an amazing sight !

When bad weather hits like this we are always so preoccupied with the impact on our lives we forget how tough it can be for creatures in the wild. It kind of puts things into perspective.

Man, that poor bird looks miserable.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: Quick check out the eagle cam!

I know it looks so cold for her but from what I found on-line she should do just fine.

Tolerance to cold temperatures:
A bald eagle's skin is protected by feathers lined with down. The feet are cold resistance because they are mostly tendon. The outside of the bill is mostly nonliving material, with little blood supply.

All you can see is the very top of the eagles' head

Even after reading the facts about eagles in the cold weather that does not look good?

Re: Quick check out the eagle cam!

In todays paper there was a story where a Hanover birder, who should have known better, and a news crew have disturbed the nest by getting too close.  By law you cannot go closer than 1000 feet to an eagles nest and they went 40 feet from it.  Real smart.   It caused the birds to fly away and leave the nest.  They don't know if it harmed the eggs or not.

It was Marc Bacaro from WGAL-TV.  He wasn't fined but given a warning.  Not a mistake he'll ever make again.

Re: Quick check out the eagle cam!

One of the on-line stories claims that the encroachment occurred because the camera crew was concerned that, from the legal distance, the site could be identified from some landmarks, including a building.

It isn't an excuse but it is a very good explanation.

So they had three options:

1) Can the story.

2) Stay legal and risk the public identifying the nest, with lots of future encroachment.

3) Violate the law and preserve the secrecy of the nest.
