Pennsylvania Senate plans vote this week on AG Kane removal

If the vote takes place only the Senate will vote and they would need 33 votes to remove the AG.

The high court voted 5-0 in September to place her license on temporary, indefinite suspension; a ruling Friday by the state Supreme Court denied Kane's request to have her law license reinstated.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The top-ranking Republican in the state Senate said Monday the chamber will vote this week on whether to remove from office Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a first-term Democrat who has spent the past two years working to expose an explicit and objectionable government email ring and the past six months fighting her own criminal charges related to a grand jury leak.

Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, of Jefferson, announced the plans for a Wednesday vote under an obscure provision of the state Constitution that, unlike the impeachment procedure, does not have any role for the House. At least 33 yes votes will be required in the 50-seat Senate, which currently has one vacancy.

Kane has repeatedly said the single-chamber procedure in the Senate is illegal, but her spokesman declined to speculate about what action she might take if the supermajority of senators votes to remove her."The attorney general believes the Senate's action is unwarranted and unconstitutional, that our system of justice is founded on a presumption of innocence and she is not being offered that presumption," her spokesman Chuck Ardo said. The plans for a vote followed a ruling Friday by the state Supreme Court that denied Kane's request to have her law license reinstated.

Gov. Tom Wolf, a fellow Democrat who has called for Kane's resignation, has made conflicting statements about how he sees his role.

Just saw the news that the PA House has voted 170 for to 12 against, to impeach.

Pa. Senate votes against removing AG Kane

Pennsylvania senators have failed to muster enough votes to remove state Attorney General Kathleen Kane from office. It's a win for the embattled prosecutor who's fighting criminal charges she leaked secret grand jury material.

The Senate voted 29-19 on Wednesday in favor of a resolution that asserted there was reasonable cause to direct Gov. Tom Wolf to remove Kane on grounds that her lack of an active law license makes it impossible to perform her duties.

I'm not sure how she does her job without a law license and a criminal trial hanging over her head.

While I have nothing against Kane personally, I think she's hurting the Democratic Party on Pennsylvania. She has zero chance of being reelected. She should step down.

She should have resigned in June of 2013 when she announced that she would not defend the Commonwealth against a suit brought by the ACLU because she agreed with the plaintiffs.

Yes, it would have been costly and futile.  But she had a sworn duty and chose to refuse to uphold her office while drawing a hefty paycheck.

Kathleen Kane just announced that she will not be seeking reelection.

Color me shocked.

Me either !

As an aside, I wonder IF ANY OTHER person in her position would have had the guts to go after the PORNGATE issue ?

Question: Was porngate that big of a deal to anyone? I mean yes, it was scummy and stupid of a supreme court justice to engage in forwarding explicit e-mails. And yes, McCaffery deserved to get booted from the bench. And yes, it's not good government and it's bad for the culture of her office and to women in general.

But at the end of the day, all she exposed was that guys can be pigs and that they like pictures of naked women.

On the other hand, she single-handedly shut down a bribery sting that netted fellow democrats, bullied a highly regarded prosecutor, and tried to do it all under court seal so she wouldn't be found out.

And then when she was called out on it, she played the race card (essentially calling her fellow prosecutors racists) and blamed the 'ol boys club.

Kathleen Kane, whom I voted for, is a horrible AG, a horrible manager or people, and unaccountable to her constituents, or frankly, herself.

I'll be glad when she's gone.
