Whether you have a gun or not in most cases will not deter a suicide bomber. Most suicide bombers go undetected till they are close to their prey and by that time it is too late. The reason they "target" the security checkpoint is more to the point that IF they tried to go through they would be found out. Till we come up with better ways to identify these type of individuals from a safe distance, they remain an effective way to kill en masse.

Like many ideas, in theory the "gun-free zone" was a good idea to try and make people safe. However, the unintended consequence is the law-abiding citizens follow this rule and therefore become vulnerable to someone wanting to do harm to a large group of defenseless citizens.

Perhaps more attention should be paid to what areas can truly be rendered gun free, if that is intended. For instance, a sign in a park is useless.
But, I think that stadiums and airport boarding areas can be rendered gun free, and should continue to be.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

I agree with that. If the "gun-free zone" can be secured in some way (such as stadiums and airport boarding areas) by armed personnel, I think that makes sense.
The issue I have is with the unsecured gun-free zones.

I agree. Putting a sign up in a public park, or on a street is a feel good exercise that has no effect. I'm sure that bad guys, and even good ones just ignore it.
